Played a long time ago, but enjoyed it.

I'll be honest, I haven't purchased this from GOG, but I owned it quite a long time ago when it was released. Perhaps because I hadn't yet played AitD 1 or 2 yet (I was a console gamer until about 1997, when I finally began playing PC games as well), there wasn't a nostalgic yearning for a return to those games that I felt disappointed by. Instead, this being my first entry into the series, I was able to judge it on its own merits. This game did have a great deal of similarity to other games in the genre that were popular in that era, i.e. Resident Evil, but it had an eeriness and a mysteriousness that RE didn't have. This game was more supernatural and the puzzles felt a little more well done. RE and SH had puzzles I had to look up the answers for and still didn't understand even when I knew the steps I was supposed to take. I never got WHY those steps worked. They didn't always feel like they required logic, so much as persistence, which annoyed me. I'm logical, but I'm impatient. Though it's been a long time since I played this, I don't remember that frustration with the puzzles like I remember with RE and SH. Above all, though, is the atmosphere. I loved the atmosphere of this game. Later, Alan Wake captured a similar atmosphere and it was positive memories of this game that drew me to Alan Wake.

Survival Horror's Hidden Gem

"Even this stove seems to regret being here." - Edward Carnby Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare gives a sinister atmosphere with its dialogue and unnerving music score. Exploring the Morton Manor unravels the tragedy that befell the Morton family. Their journals tell a tale of their descent to obssession and insanity. The World of Darkness itself is less memorable which is the -1 star but the narrative and puzzles in the Manor make up for it. Definitely worth playing for any survival horror fan. One of the best from Infogrames.

An underrated survival horror game !

Does it have flaws ? Yeah. It has alot of typos , the delivery in its VA is weird and somehow amateurish delivered ( its from a french developement team from the 90s , that mades its debut with this game ). But still very playable like typical classic Surival horror game from the ps1 - times. It oozes atmosphere and has a unique approach that i miss in horror games often . While the voice acting aint that great , it still delivers a nice story with a fresh take that isnt outright eldritch-horror . The aiming system is something to get used to because it automaticly aims at monsters if you face them directly in some sort of 180° -ish cone . Darkworks studios was a very underrated studio that were focused on horror games but never had many chances to bring out more games with such calibre . Many cancled games and extremely awesome concepts were scrapped thanks to publishers that underrated this developement studio from french and avoided Horror-games entirely in the 2000s . It even runs on my Rig fine and i had no technical difficulties whatsoever . For Horror-fans , give this game a whole playthrough. This game and its setting has still so much potential and elevates itself from the older Alone in the Darkness-games which shouldnt be shunned by its flaws and i think its the best game in the whole series. And a tripple-barreled shotgun with a double-barelled Revolver too in this game alone its worth to play it on its own . For me it earns full 5 stars .

Very underrated survival horror game

The game gas great puzzle, foreboding atmosphere, chilling soundtrack and a nice plot. Enjoyable action-adventure overall, reminds me a bit of other classics such as Resident Evil 1 and 2. Go buy it.... and well, screw the haters who are bashing the game for not being as much Lovecraft - centric as its prequels , they just missed the whole point of the series...
