Great atmosphere for its day

The game has great atmosphere, design and sound effects considering its age, i actually remember playing this on the original dreamcast back in the day and was very impressed by the overally presentation and suspenseful gameplay. However, playing this today there are just a bit too many frustrating design choices within the puzzles which hold the game back from being truly a must play title, one of which is the library section of the game which was pretty much near impossible to figure out without a walkthrough, game design like this is not fun or creative it is just a cheap way to pad out the length of the game without justifiable reason and breaks the games immersion and playability. I do overall recommend playing this game however the difficulty of puzzles means you will likely get frustrating and enjoy this more with a walkthrough on hand.

Almost as good as RE1...but not.

First off I was surprised to find that not only did the game support controller but it had 1920x1080 resolution. For a game that game out over 10 years ago these are very welcome additions. Now about the game it self it plays identically to the first 3 RE games but sugared with more shooting/action. Not quite a good thing because cheap hits are in mass amounts. Some areas even have infinite respawing enemies; not such a nice thing when trying to figure out a puzzle of find the right door for a key. I have no gripes with any other bits of the gameplay because I quite like the PS1 era of survival horror style games. The story is forgettable and for the most part the characters as well. The writing is cheesy and the voice acting fantastically 90s (enjoyable in a bad way) but you don't play this game for its story. I came for the gameplay and I was pleased and considering the price I paid and the included extras I wasn't disappointed.

Overused genre

So, let's begin with the good stuff: it has good graphics, especially with the lightning which looks incredibly good in prerendered backgrounds; the story is engaging and creepy (somewhat cheesy sometimes... 'Shadow Island'? Fuc**** original) with two storylines (Edward's and Aline's) that reflects in two different playstyles (combat for Ed, puzzle-action for Aline); and situations really scary and threatening. The bad: well, it doesn't follow up to the series' storyline (Carnby must be like 100 years old), controls, though responsive, are outdated, repeating a formula that was the point of criticisim of a genre. Don't mind the other reviews: The New Nightmare (clever, huh?) is a really enjoyable, scary and fun game. The problem was that it came out when the survival horror genre was dying, and it had to compete with the (at that time) standards of the genre: Silent Hill 2 (tons of times better) and Resident Evil (not scary, but popular). Just give it a try if you're a fan of horror.

Great Game, Could Be Better

I have this game on my PS3 and I like it, though I don't much care for the controls. That's what led me to get it on GOG so I had more control of the controlling aspect. The game seems to work fine for the most part but the cutscenes don't want to work. I've tried every fix available under the sun to no avail. I really want to play this more but having a black screen during cutscenes isn't quite what I was looking for. The other Alone in the Dark games work wonderfully, not sure why TNN doesn't

3.6 Not Great not Terrible

Really the overall rating reflect I think how most people feel about this game. You will be right at home if you like the old "tank controls" but its a bit tedious at certain spots ➤Respawning enemy's and not enough ammo, often when I figured out what i needed to do I would reload a previous save because i have wasted to much ammo i think the Devs noticed that to at the end of the game they give you a crystal firing gun and the crystal respawn once collected. ➤Most of the Important Story elements happened off screen 100 or 30 years ago you have to read about them, there is a lot of text in this game sometimes up to 50 pages. ➤Horror is Subjective but this is not a scary game overall. ➤Way to many Puzzles but if you like those this might be a positive thing for you. ➤ Boss Fights have to be defeated in a specific way and there is no way to figure it out without a guide. The game is not telegraphing if the Boss is taking damage. ➤ This was standard at the time but sadly no unlockable costumes or Weapons for this game or funny cheats to play around or maybe a game plus mode etc. ➤You get 3 keys get ready to test every locked door and open none of them because you have to put a wolf mask on an owl statue to progress and reload a previous save because you wasted to much ammo. The Good ➤The setting, you explore for the most of the game an old mansion and I can explore mansions all day long. ➤The graphics, beautiful prerendered background, weapon Models and Enemy models also Aline is the most voluptuous female character in any horror game it kept me going when the game felt like a slog. ➤A forgiving game it uses a save talisman similar to ink ribbons in Resident Evil But at he end of the game I hat about 30 of those left if not more and i saved a lot. ➤ You can run past most enemy's in the later half of the game the spaces are wide open most of the time. Overlay you should play it keep guide nearby to save you from frustration and you will have a good time.
