Description
The year is 2191 and the galaxy stands on the brink of war. Only the Interplanetary Corps maintain an uneasy peace. The IPCC Miraculous was heading back for Federation HQ after six months on routine patrol around the Intex Network. Then came the orders to check out a remote Intergalactic Space Research Centre which had failed to transmit on any of the Federation wavebands. ISRC-4 was situated near the red-giant Gianor and was the last place anyone on the Miraculous wanted to go.

Alien Breed features a classic arcade shooter gameplay with hordes of aliens that are trying to kill you and a huge arsenal of weapons to defend yourself. In Alien Breed: Tower Assault levels are connected in multiple ways and there is no predefined path so you can freely chose where to go next, making each pass a unique experience. In addition, both titles can be played in cooperative mode adding further to the already impressive re-playability value of these games.

Not to be confused!

This is information rather than a review. Team 17 has released a trilogy of "resurrected" Alien Breed games: "Alien Breed: Impact", "Alien Breed 2: Assault", and "Alien Breed 3: Descent". These are NOT the same games that GOG is selling here. These two games are the ancestors of the modern trilogy (which happens to be quite nice, by the way).

The Big One

Alien Breed is a true classic of top-down shooters and a legend for all Amiga players. It's really aged nowadays, but still fun. The second one - Alien Breed 2 which isn't included in the package is immensly better providing character selection and bigger weapon selection as well as a longer scenario, but despite that Alien Breed is still quite enjoyable on its own. While Tower Assault is one of the longest top-down shooters providing multiple paths and almost a 5-hour playthrough time. The selection of weapons is rather large, nothing that awe-inspiring though, but that's not what is important - the most important thing is the gameplay which is fantastic - long winding corridors, searching for keys narrowly escaping the countdown timer when the floor detonates... the constant action will keep the player pumped up on adrenaline. Tower assault also enchances the storyline aspect of the game - logs in form of smartcards and INTEX terminals provide invaluable information on what was going in the towers before and during the assault. The game also features hot-seat coop play and getting a friend to help along the way is advised as even though the credits will have to be split, the other teammate can help in keeping your back clear of aliens. This game pack is a definate MUST-GET for all Amiga fans.

The Golden Era of Team17

Before Team17's modern/current era of making average games there was an earlier era of many gems such as the early Worms games and this one, Alien Breed. With it you get fantastic 2D visuals and a great artstyle inspired by Aliens, and to play is simply a joy being viewed from a topdown angle and is a shooter. I've been waiting for GOG to sign Team17 for ages and this is just brilliant!

Just. Wow.

Clearly I'm not the only one who remembers this. Truly a masterpiece of its time. Ever larger hordes of aliens, a scant handful of ammo and... never enough keys! This was one of those games that was still possible to lose because you simply didn't open the right doors. Not because you didn't open the right door 3 levels ago, but because you've been wasting your keys. Every one counts, so don't just go opening them left and right or you'll find yourself wasting entire clips on doors - and there are barely enough to fend off the aliens! Tower Assault was hard as hell, but with one little advantage - using the password gives you 50,000 credits, far more loose change than I ever had at the halfway point... But I digress. A truly legendary pair of games.

Brilliant Old School Shooter

I remember Alien Breed when I was a kid. Back then I had to put up with a two level demo from a disk which came with a gaming magazine, so getting the full game has been 21 years in the making. What a great game. The top down graphics are a true classic of pixel art and the game play is really good fun. Yes, Alien Breed is dated. The graphics and movement options obviously can't compare to games created since and the game lacks "realism", whatever that means in the context. I couldn't help smiling when the aliens disappeared in a puff of smoke whenever they were shot, or when they bumped into me. The only minor issue I had with the game was the Alien AI, which really hasn't stood the test of time. The Aliens lack the aggression that characterises aliens in later games of a similar ilk, such as the Alien Shooter series. In the early levels the alien's sheepish behaviour made me feel almost guilty for shooting them! If you want an all guns blazing, total immersion gaming experience pick something else. If you want a classic 2D arcade shooter with a good atmosphere and a large side helping of nostalgia, then look no further than Alien Breed.
