Short, controlled bursts

I received the Alien Breed trilogy via GoG giveaway recently and decided to give them a whirl, having heard a lot about them about 10 years ago. I got this running through Linux using WINE/Lutris and Win7 compatibility mode. I've seen some reviews about the repetitive nature of the game - but for a twin stick shooter, I don't know what else people were honestly expecting. It's a very basic, arcade-y style of game, remade from an old title that was also a top-down shooter. I like that the theme is sort of Ridley Scott Aliens-esque and think the atmosphere, at least in the opening hour or so is done well enough. As in the title, if you think the game is monotonous, just play it in 'short, controlled bursts' over a week or so and spread the experience out some more :P

3rd person isometric indie Dead Space...

Around a year or so i discovered my love for Top-Down/Isometric sci-fi shooters... i bought Alien Shooter and all its sequels on sale on steam. (i also ended up buying them from Google Play Store on my Galaxy.) I recently made a GOG account and started buying games ... i came across the Alien Breed Trilogy... they were on sale at the time as well... Once i got the game donwloaded and started for the first time i could immediately tell Dead Space had inspired some of this game! The Space Station broken down due to some huge ghost shit slamming into our ship, and us having to run around and fix everything all while trying to stay alive! **if you played Dead Space you will understand why these are mentioned.** -Every. Single. Time. i would get near a living human being i would watch as they were killed or dragged off never to be seen again! -Our suit -there are quite a few doors that are slamming, really fast shut and opened over and over.. -the damn fan vents!!!!! For now that is all i can think of off the top of my head! There are a couple thngs that i didnt like tho... THE CONTROLS! lol, i did get used to them but, man did i have a hard time with them! All of the shaking of the screen! idk if you can take it off or what, i did look in settings couldnt find anything... i think this game was a pretty good little indie sci-fi horror shooter! it was fun to just zone out and kill some aliens!

Too much backtracking, but crash free.

It plays fine, no crash. The controls are OK, could be better. The Graphics are as expected, level design is nice too. Could be four star, cause playing is fun. What ticks me: Constantly backtracking within one level, making it a chore. You have a door which needs power - you have to go back were you just were to restore power since the console can be activated NOW, but you need the key-code to restore power - so you backtrack to where you already where and now you can get the key since the locker is NOW visible - but then you need... The same with reactor shutdown, elevator activation or whatever: You have to walk the same place very often since you have to do the stuff in the order the game designer wants you to, else you cannot even click things. Of course every time you backtrack a new bunch of aliens come out of the floor. Fix the constant screen shaking due to those random explosions: copy \AlienBreedEp1Game\Config\AlienBreedEp1CameraShake.ini to %userprofile%\Documents\My Games\UnrealEngine3\AlienBreedEp1Game\Config Edit the copy, change: [ExampleGame.ABCameraShake] ExplosionShakeDuration=0.0 CameraBobDampen=0.0 Disable blur effect during explosions: Edit %userprofile%\Documents\My Games\UnrealEngine3\AlienBreedEp1Game\Config\AlienBreedEp1Engine.ini [SystemSettings] MotionBlur=False DepthOfField=False Oh, and you can .ini hack first person view if you want, search the internet for it. But Top-Down works better.

Mediocre, still fun

So far the game seems rather mediocre and a bit frustrating. The gameplay consists of aliens popping up at scripted points in the game level, so there is no planning around or strategy involved unless you reload and already know what to expect. The game progression is also entirely linear, it has no surprise factor at all. What is most annoying is that things explode for no reason, adding noise and jitter to the screen that makes it hard to focus and constantly turning on vibration on the gamepad. This seemed somewhat expected on the first level of the game, but apparently the developers must have decided this was a great piece of functionality because so far it occurs on every single level and in almost every room. Items on the walls -- the same items, over and over again -- are just constantly exploding and causing fires for no reason. Still fun to shoot things around in a top-down camera view.

Fun gunplay, hard to control

I really enjoyed playing through the game, with every level introducing a new gun and enemies. The setting of the game is good, and i appreciate the look and feel of the comics, wich are used to tell you the story between every level. Now I'll start with the bad: the camera is awful, at least in the first levels, where you have to learn a lot to just start using it, if you are using the keybord there is a fix to auto-aim with your mouse (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=663505110) but I used a controller, which for me It's better for this type of games. The devs thought that explosions and shaking the camera every second was a great addition to the game... It wasn't. Also there is the chanche that you'll get stuck at certain points in the game, and you'll have to reload or kill yourself. They also removed the online features like co-op and leaderboards, and there is no LAN or split-screen mode. In the end It's a good experience but be prepared to be frustrated with the controls.
