First non 5 star review
Looks like I am going to be the only one so far that won't be giving GOG's version of Albion a 5 star review. I remember playing this back in the day and spent lot of time. It is indeed one of the most very charming, and refreshing, and different in a lot of ways, rpgs. I used to still have the Albion CD and instruction manual until a couple years ago, and was joyed when I seen this come to GOG. But alas, after reading the system requirements and gleefully buying this gem from GOG, I was quickly disappointed. First of all, this is just another DOSbox version. 2nd, at first I kept getting messages with the 64bit compatibility issue, saying that this game was not compatible under the 64bit Windows 8, even with adjusted compatibility settings and everything. Somehow, I got past that and don't ask me how. I am not quite sure myself, and am afraid if I ever have to resinstall this again, I won't be able to get it to run under 64bit. System requirements under GOG do not state that this is not compatible with windows 64bit. Second, now that I got this thing running, there still seems to be some very annoying mouse sensativity issues, and it is very cumbersome to use the mouse with this game, and it does not come with a pdf manual of any kind, so don't know if there are any hot keys I can use instead of the mouse, in a lot of areas where this would be very helpful. The original, authentic version of Albion, could it be played on any of today's systems, without the need to modify the game itself or modify your system settings to the point of making it almost unplayable just to get it to run, would definately be worth a 5 star review. GOG's version, however, I feel I must deduct a couple of stars for reasons listed above.

Overrated, and unnecessarily confusing
The near five star average of this game with the sheer amount of reviews of it being five stars made it a no-brainer to purchase. While the characters were full of personality, along with a decent soundtrack, I have a hard time recommending this, because navigating is a complete nightmare. Trying to find gold coins is extremely difficult in this game as well, and you need a compass to be able to really navigate at a comfortable level, but it is already too expensive at a whooping 60 coins. Prepare to die a lot in this game, as when you are in a battle, enemies can easily overpower, and take down your entire party, resulting in having to reload the game quite frequently, and I have never been in a battle in which none of the characters died. I always have to take at least one of them to a healer to revive the person in question to be able to progress in this game. I really wanted to like this, I really thought this game had potential to be an incredible piece of work, but with the frustrating maze-like areas you traverse, and the consistent deaths in the game, I unfortunately cannot really recommend this to anyone.

Could have been much better
(Disclaimer: I played the original, not the version here.) This game had great promise, but unfortunately it did not quite fulfil it. The artwork is unique and very nice, in places beautiful. The 3D dungeons are very ugly in 2016 (or indeed 2 years after the game came out), but have a certain charm to them. The problem lies elsewhere. First, the story starts out great, but soon becomes very scarce. Also, there is this sense of urgency, but there is no timer in the game. Which is good on one side, namely, one can explore the world; on the other, it completely takes the tension out of the game. On second thought though, so far so good, because the game's timekeeping is bugged: while the party can traverse great distances on the world map in an hour, inside buildings it is hardly enough to walk down a corridor. :) The rule system could have been improved as well. Skills / abilities don't seem to improve much, however many skill points are thrown at them, and mana is painfully scarce, forcing one to run out of some dungeons every half a level or so. All in all, it feels as if the game was released too early. It wouldn't have taken much to make it actually good. On the plus side: I don't know how GOG packaged the game, but the original definitely works under DosBox, so Mac/Linux users can play it as well.
