Age of Wonders: Planetfall

So I play AOW 4 and love it and decided to get this because it was on sale with the DLC. Well, I've played the intro stuff and I really like it. Good sci-fi theme and the graphics hold up pretty well. Check it out if you are inclinded to!

As a veteran turn-based player the game is something getting used to, but once you have figured out everything it is quite fun. This is a more combat oriented game compare to all of the other 4X strategies I have played so far to name a few but not limited to, Civlization, Stellaris, Songs of Conquest and many others. So if you want a relatively fast paced combat heavy turn-based strategy 4X game based in a scifi setting, then this game is no brainer.

This game is a pretty decent combination of “Civilization” and “Heroes of Might & Magic” but in the end the devs didn’t manage to give it enough soul for it to be a truly outstanding game. Tactical combat slows down the flow of the game a lot (luckily there is auto-combat) and units don’t have enough personality; not to mention that the defenders can’t retreat. Great concepts and ideas, all wrapped around a combat system that could have been fun, but REALLY REALLY ISN'T. The game hides information from you in many ways, meaning that you never have all the pieces needed to make a decision. This leaves the player feeling enraged and out of control when the AI, yet again, makes a completely bullshit move that 'should have been impossible' only to find out that, yeah, that was totally possible but you had to look on four different screens and do mental math while retaining the values from each screen separately in your mind to determine that the range of that one ability was actually enough because the line of sight ETC ETC ETC I liked my experience with it except for the combat, but the combat is the whole point.
