Age of Wonders 3

This game does get old fast (for me). It is unique enough to give it 5 stars. I found it funny but neat about the popular spellcasters 2 legged mount... I forget her name now due to not playing for some time now but she had this funny cute mount. This game is cute, funny, interesting, and turn-based. Tactical combat makes you think, which is not too difficult for me. But yes, it got old fast after just 2 or 3 months of full-time play and the replayability just wasn't there for me. I only played using the cannon/gun faction with the British man leading it as all others I briefly tried out just didn't interest me enough with their abilities and theme. Be warned, one of the last levels/maps in the campaign is more or less a trap (unfair) where ALL AI enemy factions will gang up on you! Trick is to just focus on attacking the dude the campaign guides you to kill/beat. In theory you can conquer all other factions on that map... but in practice it just isn't a realistic goal, LOL! You do level up during gameplay so this is a TBS + RPG as an F.Y.I. for everyone. Most video games don't have great replayability. Good old games like DOOM (1990's), Duke Nukem 3D, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and especially Descent 1/2/3 all had excellent replayability just as a few examples. Games help you find your way in mortal 'real' life, educate, and entertain. I remember the 'feeling' each video game gave me from my childhood NOT the technicals or genre so much. Back to the Future and Patrician IV: Rise of a Dynasty were the 2 most important video games I ever played other than driving sims like NFS. They teach a lot while at the same time being fun to play. I love maps so the DOOM level editor back in the 1990's was addicting to me. May you find your way in life through gaming! Have a great day!

The game is great. The my only beef is with the developers not releasing the Linux port onto the gog platform. when I heard that the Linux port was soon to be released I came over to gog and purchased it immediately. When I logged into steam and saw the announcement for the Linux version release I got excited, ready to download and enjoy this title on my laptop, only to find out there is no planned release for the Linux version on gog.... I am disappointed. still a great game, just wish I could have what steam users have.

This game is excellent! Do not mistake my score for the game being poor. My score is entirely related to GOG's handling of the game. The game works great on linux and even Steam has it listed as a linux game. I have watched countless videos of the game being played by people on linux. I would have bought this in a heartbeat if GOG gave us a Steam code for it or if they supported linux as the game itself does. I'll have to wait the next steam sale on this title.

Many, many interesting ideas here. Also: every single thing that worked well in the previous games - those are the things they decided to change. With predictable results. Since "to hit" rolls have been taken out entirely, units in general die much, much faster than in previous AOW games. It is not unusual to see a heavy cavalry or hero unit go from full health to dead in a single round of combat from attacks by just a couple enemy units. This throws the balance of forces common in previous AOW games completely out the window. Flanking implementation: if a unit attacks on its round, it can be flank-attacked from behind or sides. So instead of counterattacking, it turns to face the unit that flank-attacked it. This in turn means that a properly orchestrated series of attacks from different directions can result in a series of flank-attacks with the attacking unit never being able to respond to any of them - a common situation: knights charge infantry, get plinked at by light crossbow unit, turn to face light crossbow unit which means they turn their backs to the infantry they're supposedly attacking, who then get to carve them up real good. In practice, the best thing with heavy cavalry is move them right up next to enemy units but not attack, only let them passively counterattack. This of course makes no sense whatsoever - but it is what the game rewards, and what the game punishes you for not doing. To put it in AOW3 terms, it's as if every unit in the earlier games had Lucky and Tireless Awareness. Effectively taking these characteristics away from (nearly) all units means they die incomparably faster, which means even a slight force advantage snowballs very quickly, and the first participant in a battle to get an advantage will capitalize very quickly. This ends up meaning that the PVE game is too easy, because a human player can typically take zero casualties in every single battle. I have never once gotten multiplayer in AOW3 to work.
