Not A Roguelike
I'm pretty sure the majority of players will say this game is FTL with pirate ships. That's not an unfair assessment, but I think the comparison is a little short sighted. To me it felt more like Ironcast mixed with FTL. This game is also not a Rogelike. You do have to manage your ship and crew, but there's a whole storyline that goes with the game. Loss of your ship doesn't mean gameover. I'm also pretty sure that the devs made the game to, 'feel' like you're in dire straights more than try to kill you. Once your ship's hull get's to around 30% you seem to take less damage. Also your crew is a lot tougher to kill than FTL. You don't really have those crazy scenarios where everything goes wrong and you enjoy watching it all burn. Instead combat is more forgiving. The game also gives you choices to fight or run and there's no real penalty to running. So the game's more about playing it through to the end and experiencing the story. To uncover the mystery of the protaganist and the cult that's chasing him. To give an ellision of desperation. For what Abandon Ship does in those reguards I think it's a great game! The $16 price tag is fair, but for $25 it's a little iffy to recommend. Don't think of this game as a Roguelike and you'll have a good time.
