Follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo, in a heartrending journey through the darkest hours of history. Hunted by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by unstoppable swarms of rats, Amicia and Hugo will come to know and trust each other. As they struggle to survive against overwhelming odds, they will fight to find purpose in this brutal, unforgiving world.
1349. The plague ravages the Kingdom of France. Amicia and her younger brother Hugo are pursued by the Inquisition through villages devastated by the disease. On their way, they will have to join forces with other children, and evade swarms of rats using fire and light. Aided only by the link that binds their fates together, they will face untold horrors in their struggle to survive.
As their adventure begins… the time of innocence ends.
This game has beautiful graphics, beautiful music, well-developed characters and rather easy gameplay. Of course, the last one can be for some either advantage or disadvantage.
HOWEVER, the best thing in this game is a great, heart-moving storyline. It might be seen as a little melodramatic, but what do you expect after a game where you are supposed to survive as a teenager in medieval France during a war AND a plague while taking care of your little brother?
If you were moved by the story told in Baldur's Gate Saga, The Witcher Series or Final Fantasy VII, then this game is for you.
I have to say that the game certainly impresses in terms of visuals and overall quality - and outshines various AAA games (I would have said that even before the dire sequence of AAA releases lately). The story and world is incredibly linear, but it tells a nice story, with a variety of likeable characters (and hateable villains). However, about 2/3 of the way through the game, the gameplay shifts in a way that is as abrupt as it is unwanted for me. The previous stealth-based game is replaced by a sequence of rushed combat scenarios which you have not been prepared for. You will die a lot due to a lack of a skill you have not only had no chance to develop beforehand, but have been actively avoiding (and rewarded for doing so).
It's not the first stealth game that I've encountered this with. Aragami has a similar lack of faith in its own convictions when it came to a mid-game boss that ruined the game for me.
An incredible technical achievement, a likeable cast of characters (and good actors behind them), and some stunning (if not always beautiful - given the story) visuals, marred by an inconsistent mode of play.
If you like the likes of new Tomb Raider and Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice I believe this will be up your alley. It is not always fast pace, the story, characters and graphics are beautiful and memorable.
It is well worth the play, especially at such a low price now. Highly recommend.
I have seen some people rating it 3 stars and below. This game is not for everyone and if you found reviews and screenshots not interesting - the same will go for the game. I had no expectations and came out very impressed and happy with the choice.
It could have been very good, but the main story is not that interesting, and the voice acting is not the best (at least in english), it tried too hard and that made it a little boring and repetitive. Nevertheless, i did play it until the end mostly because of the characters.
As an older gamer I'm a bit burned out on most games. I find mechanics often very tiring, and getting in my way. I was doubting to buy this game for a long while now, being put off by some of the negative reviews. Boy was I mistaken. I would score this game 10/10!
The graphics are simply amazing, the atmosphere, the detail, the medieval setting, the voicing in French, everything is just AAA quality.
The gameplay: I just loved the difficulty, nowhere did I get stuck, the story kept going at a very brisk pace and never did the gameplay hinder my progress. Just enough challenge for me to enjoy, puzzles only require a minute or 2 of thought, and then on with the game again. There are also so many quality of life features, why don't other games employ these? The presence of guards is subtly indicated on the sides of your screen, after reloading you still have the item equipped that you did before your death (such a lifesaver!). Cinematics are pausable! This game really, really respects your time. There is no filler whatsoever!
So the major downside for many reviewers, the simple gameplay, is something that I really loved.
The story is also really intriguing, and I hope the sequel continues on that. There are a few loose ends at the ending.
I didn't encounter any bugs, the pathfinding of the npc's is excellent and guards only get alarmed on seeing yourself, not your npc's. So good!
If I had to give one minor, very minor critic, is that when using the French audio (did I mentiond how good the voice acting is?), the English soldiers also speak French. I would have preferred them to speak English.
