NES JRPG Nostalgia - 7.5/10

NES nostalgia or JRPG fans: buy it. Everyone else: YMMV, but worth checking out on sale. Full Review: https://www.gog.com/forum/8bit_adventures/review_nes_jrpg_nostalgia_7510 -- [Story] If this game was released back in the 1980s, this would be the best JRPG in that era. No convoluted story, decent amount of character development and progression. Wasn't too sure about your NPC ally and the setting, though. [Gameplay] Fully turn-based JRPG like FF1-3 with a DQ1 battle UI. You control three members: warrior, thief, and mage. Elemental mechanics plays a big part in damage based on colours for attacks and the target's type. Red > Green > Blue like in Pokemon. Status effects stay useful from start to end. Everything feels well-balanced. What I didn't like was how some islands look like you can land on them when you first get the airship. But they can't be accessed until later in the game where you get access to the second airship. Wasted a lot of time there. [Graphics] This one is hard to judge. The 8-bit sprites and environments look beautiful. However, some assets aren't fully 8-bit so the environments feel inconsistent and distracting. Some monster sprites also lack polish like the the swamp tree and your NPC ally. Pretty hit-or-miss. For everyone else, it's easy to ignore. [Audio] Indifferent. Nothing memorable, but nothing too bad. [PC Requirements] Anything can run this game. [Bugs] Issues with fullscreen, though can be circumvented by [Alt] + [Enter] to force fullscreen. [F1] also makes your cursor disappear. No bugs with the actual game itself except maybe a couple typos. [Game Time] Compared to NES JRPGs, this is short. For an average player, I'd say ~9 hours for main story. And ~12 hours to complete everything. I took 15 hours leaving no stone unturned. [Novelty] Great take on 8-bit JRPGs. This is my baseline for all NES-style JRPGs in the future. [Price] NES nostalgia or JRPG fans: buy it. Everyone else: YMMV, but worth checking out on sale.

A nice take on Jrpg Nostalgia

Surprisingly good. Stands out from similar style games with good writing and a simple but fun rock paper scissors style magic/weakness system. Decent length given that it is not padded out with grinding like the old games were. I am looking forward to the next one.

Good game didn't overstay its welcome

The main combat mechanic was starting to get boring but thankfully the game was just the right length and ended at that point. The rock, paper, scissors mechanic of using this colored attack against this colored foe can only go so far. The story and exploration was pretty solid through and through however. To those who play make sure you stock up on items and potions and when you get to the final boss and reach a point where you feel like you can't do anything. Endure and in enduring grow strong.

Once you go 8BA-2, it's hard to go back

I played 8 Bit Adventures after finishing the second installment; so, this played both as a graphical and narrative prequel. There is a marked decrease in graphical detail typical in the first instalment of a series however, the narrative charm is not lost. I enjoyed dust as the first villain of this series as it was the bane to cartridge gaming. The game is held back by its limited battle mechanics which, as another reviewer pointed out, plays like a colour coded rock paper scissors. Seeing the beginnings of 8 bit adventures gave me an appreciation for the improvements made in the sequel. I am curious to see the 3rd installment. Will it be the conclusion of the 8 bit trilogy? Will the heroes level up to 16 bits? What or who will be the next villain? Do yourself a favour, buy the bundle. This was a great series. I hope see more. 6.5/10
