Playstation 1 Game.

I think the title says it best. For anyone thinking this is an actual port that has been improved to what our current society deems the standard when buying games, you will probably be surprised at best, and disappointed at worst - especially for the price they are asking for it. If you do not care that you are actually buying a PS1 version of 40 Winks, made to run on PC by the usual method, than you can see (and rate) the game by itself, which I will do. And, well, there is actually not too much to say. The game is great for an early 3D platformer. But keep in mind that it is - indeed - an early 3D platformer. That means stiff (and therefore unfair) controls, a difficulty that can be quite harsh even on easy based on said controls, as well as a cheap combat system... again, based on said controls. That being said, the game has fun levels and encounters to handle in order to collect (and free) the desired collectables like you would expect. Basically anything you would expect from a game like this is there, even the fancy, sometimes pointless, transformations of your character - as well as a nice told but overall not that important story. The only thing I can criticize is that it does indeed have frame drops in certain locations/situations, which seems to differ based on user's hardware. Which is a shame, as the rest of the emulation is actually decent (or for more experienced users at least sufficient I suppose) and is a bit of a let-down. That being said, for everyone who knows themselves around that stuff, can actually already think of an easy solution for this problem. ... Why should you even bother with this version, then? Well, the answer to this is a second question: Would you reply to "You can finally get 40 Winks for a modern system now!" with a "Yes". ... I guess that says it all. But yes, as mentioned, the price is indeed a bit outrageous. I would recommend getting it in a sale - and having a fun time with it.

"Move over, Mario.."

40 Winks in a really charming and delightful platformer that I enjoy revisiting every few years. A handful of diverse locations, with some nice tunes accompanying. While the controls are a little slippery, all the boss battles suck and some of the dream-keys are hidden in really jerk spots, the enemy variety, level design, music and power ups make up for it; Really great title. When you purchase on GOG, you're essentially buying a PS1 ROM + an Emulator. There are much better ways to play this game that the included emulator (retroarch, ODE), but this purchase is great if you'd like to LEGALLY own a ROM for use anywhere.

Recommended, with Caveats...

Again, this a straight port of the PSX game to PC with little to no additions; I'm just glad that it offers controller support, and that it was even released here, considering that I don't think it was ever released on PSN or XBLA. That said, I'm playing this with my XBone controller, I notice the Square and Triangle buttons have been transposed with each other; Y (top button) is considered the Square (left button), and X (left button) is considered the Triangle (top) button, but it should be the other way around! I have to attack using what is essentially the Triangle button, and boy, let me tell you, does it feel off kilter! If you've already played the platforming greats (Mario, Banjo, Rayman, Medievil, Spyro, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, etc.), and still need to scratch that platforming itch, you might enjoy this, but I hope you're into classic platformers, especially from the PSX era. The sound design (ambient SFX, etc.) and graphics (as dated as they may be) and music still manage to be immersive, especially the house hub area and the haunted area, the very first area, which rather remind me of Medievil, honestly. The controls, camera, combat system, hit detection, etc., are all VERY janky. You WILL miss jumps because the camera decided to switch angles all of a sudden. You will try to hit enemies, and your hits might not land, while they crash into you and deal damage; thankfully, the game's life gauge is rather sizeable, and allows for plenty of mistakes. It takes some adjustment, and if you give it long enough, you'll get used to it. The levels are VERY linear, and if you don't go through them as they were designed to be played (there are eventually multiple branching paths), you'll be doing some backtracking. ALSO, DO NOT quit in the middle of the level, otherwise you lose ALL of your progress in it! Despite all these shortcomings, though, I'm having fun with it. Nitro Rad's video review on YouTube is a good resource to find out more.
