Infuriating, Nonsensical Physics

Does anybody remember moon boots? That's what the suspension feels like. And the cars are so fragile it's like they're made of thin PVC or something. They can spin nearly 180 degrees for seemingly no reason like there are invisible oil slicks everywhere. Simply one of the worst racers I have ever played. The visuals have aged very poorly, as well; lifeless and empty environments completely devoid of any detail or character.

Not good

I have to conclude that the many positive reviews of this game a driven by nostalgia. The graphics did not age well, and the game play leaves a lot to be desired. All in all, not a good racer. There are many out there that are better for both single and multiplayer.

1nsane, not so...

Pretty fun I guess. It was really designed for multi-player though...and it shows when playing single player. I really can't recommend this one. Had trouble with my joystick heres the fix though; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARECodemastersInsane It's name: Control1 My unchanged values for turning with the left stick (axis U): 0000 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0008 03 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 0010 FF FF FF FF 00 00 00 00 0018 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 0020 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0028 00 00 00 00 FF FF FF FF 0030 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0038 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 0040 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ... The first lines seem to hold the info for the steering and the info seems to be grouped in 32bit (4 hexadecimal pairs). Anyway on the line 0008 I changed the value 01 to 00: 0008 03 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Don't believe the nostalgic hype

Terrible physics prevent the single player mode from being fun, much less forgiving enough for the player to win one race. The AI instantly knows where to go and can drive with perfect precision. Even the graphics are lacking: from dull and barren environments to cars that just look lifeless, there's nothing redeeming about it. The music tracks are droning, constant, rock guitar tunes that are nowhere near "insane." Its a terrible lackluster game that doesn't even touch on nostalgia because back in 2001 I was playing much better off-road racing games. The worst part about all of this is that I'd have to argue with GOG just to get a refund and its not worth it.
