Zone 66 (1993)

by Renaissance, Epic MegaGames
Themes:Action
Story:A pilot is warned by a mysterious stranger that something terrible is about to happen in his town. Rushing home, the pilot discovers that his wife and baby daughter were murdered. The stranger who tried to warn the pilot is gravely wounded; however, before dying, he passes some information to him. The hero is back on his plane, determined to avenge the deaths of his beloved ones, alone against terrorist forces whose true goals are yet unknown... Zone 66 is a top-down shooter in which the player controls an aircraft, eliminating other planes as well as ground-based hostile units (tanks, etc.). The player-controlled aircraft is able to move in any direction, avoiding enemy fire or preparing a better angle for the next shot. There is a wide selection of aircraft to choose from and each of them, before the gameplay, can be individually equipped with different types of weapons like missiles and bombs. Battles take place on eight different maps.Show more

When I was young I was blown away with the soundtrack blasting out my speakers. The visuals of the intro animation, simple for modern times, but really nice for that time. I could never finish the story game because of a bug, that made it impossible to finish one of the maps. An indestructible object... Love to see an official release with fix. With choices of music, gravis or adlib or soundblaster. It had dedicated tracks for all. The gameplay itself is nothing special. But it's engaging nevertheless.
I was a kid when I played the shareware version of the game and that was my first time playing a bullethell game and that I enjoyed it and would love to own the full version of the game.
Loved this game as a kid back when I got my first MS-DOS / Windows for Workgroups 3.11 PC back in 1994. Was only ever able to obtain the shareware version of this title back then, and longed to be able to afford the full version. I was fortunate enough to later acquire the full version as well as a fix for the bug in the second mission as described in the stories told by some of the other fine folks regarding this game. Abandonware is your best friend in this case, should you be interested. (just Google "Abandonware zone 66") Admittedly, I still play this game to this day trying to finish all the story missions. Would be super awesome to see a polished, solidly presented version of this game by GoG. Here's to hoping this eventually happens one day...
