Tower Unite and its predecessor, GMod Tower, are one of the main hangout games of my life and thus a source of countless memories.
Gmod Tower began in 2009 as a sort of hubworld server within Garry’s Mod. Nowadays, we’d call it a Metaverse, but back in ‘09, we basically knew it as the funny Second Life that you can hang out in in Garry’s Mod. The lobby acted as a vast chill hangout spot, filled with Flash games, minigames like billiards and Texas hold ‘em, and theaters where you could queue up synced YouTube videos to watch together. All of this was built as a lobby to lead into a wide selection of minigames, from competitive shooters to racing games to minigolf, it had it all. Well, if you couldn’t guess, operating a minigame server in Garry’s Mod is not a sound business strategy, so Pixeltail spun off the server into its own Unreal Engine-powered Steam game, Tower Unite. Counting GMod Tower’s run, it took 16 years, but this year, in April 2025, Tower Unite hit 1.0.
Tower Unite is the financially solvent, far more versatile GMod Tower. No longer do those mnigames have to contend with running as a Half-Life 2 mod; they can now just be good Unreal Engine games. Tower Unite Mini Golf is one of the better mini golf experiences on the market. Zombie Massacre is just a great top-down zombie coop shooter. Little Crusaders is just a fantastic, goofy, asymmetrical multiplayer game with a great art style. Ball Race is able to be just a great Monkey Ball-esque racing game. That’s only half the game worlds, let alone Plaza activities.
I have spent so many hours catching up with friends and making new ones over Tower Unite across its litany of game modes. There is just so much to do, so much fuel for conversation, so much fun to be had with friends. This game and its predecessor have provided me so many wonderful nights of entertainment with my friends, and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.
