Don't know where to Start. One of the first 3D stealth games, amazing story, played it a million times... A core memory for me. I first played it on a demo CD (pretty common for it's time) and fell in love. I played the demo over and over until I finally got the full version. The second mission really freaked me out as a child with the friggin scary zombies.
If you're simply looking for the first Thief game, it's on GOG under the title Thief Gold. I'm assuming this entry is specifically for the original Thief: The Dark Project, without the changes Thief Gold made. 'Vanilla' Thief had 300+ votes on the old Wishlist.
There's a mod called GoldToDark that converts a Thief Gold installation to revert the changes back to TDP.

The moment of arriving at the back of the cathedral, peering in the window, seeing what was inside, and then realizing - in sheer horror - that I would have to go in there at some point - that chill has stayed with me since first experiencing it 20 odd years ago. The steady competence of moving through the areas suddenly giving way to a panicked thrill as a danger approaches still gets me. Overall, the best most affecting game experience ever, and the Black Parade mod has even elevated it further.

One of the greatest games ever made, and THE best stealth game. Nothing beats this for atmosphere and worldbuilding. A phenomenal game from a sadly short lived studio that did some of the most incredible games of all time.
The second best stealth game ever, after Thief 2 metal age. I replay it every other year but even with TFix comunity patch it makes problems. I hope somebody is able to safe it and build in a windowed mode because on 4k its way to much scaled up to be fun. All the tips to run it in a window crash on my system sadly. For some years I even had a virtual computer installed to run it on a Win95.
To the game, a true stealth game not like modern variants with "stealth till fail then murder" Dishonered and co gameplay. Garret as a taciturn thief is great for this genre because when he opens his mouth its important.
From the levels Thief 1 is a bit more versatile then Thief 2 with tomb raiding, stealing goods, feeling and teaching people a lesson, jail breaks, to the moment you meet the plot and have a undercover missions in the mix.
The art direction is a steam\electronic-punk mix very unique with electric lights, torches and alarm systems. That thief 2 then turn in even more industrial revolution and steampunk later. Everything feels very early in electrification most parts fail or look experimental. Poor light the house still with candle while rich have some parts already lit up with lights Garret cant blow out.

FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival.
Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed.
The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo.
As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity.
Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control.
