If anyone asks me, "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri" (or SMAC) is the game that should be polished up for the 21st century. I have probably had a dozen computers since I bought my first copy of this game, and I would bet that I have had it installed on every single one of those computers. I got my start on "eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate" games with Sid Meier's Civilization (the first one) back in the early 90s, on my friend's IBM PC clone. In this game, one of your victory conditions was to send a ship to Alpha Centauri, to colonize a planet there. You see a spaceship in flight through the void of space, while listening to "Ode to Joy" playing on the tinny PC speaker. This game picks up right where the other game left off, except there is no joy. Just as humans will do, they find a good reason to factionalize and go at each others' throats. On this new planet, it's not nations fighting for supremacy; it's philosophies fighting for supremacy. And that's where the story begins. When I say "story," I don't mean some window dressing to spiff up a game; I mean a real-deal STORY. As it unfolds, I wanted to know more about this elaborate universe. The setting provoked serious thought. The future technologies captured my imagination. The faction leaders, and the Planet itself (herself?) fascinated me deeply.
And then, just as I thought this game was a masterpiece... they went and made it even better with an expansion pack! Remember what "Brood War" did for "Starcraft?" That is what "Alien Crossfire" did for SMAC.
SMAC will ever be one of my all-time strongest reasons that I love video games.
