I remember my dad buying Robot City for me and my brother from a long-defunct store called Odd Jobs. The game's setting was neat: you played an amnesiac who crash lands in the planet of Robot City, which is solely inhabited and governed by autonomous robots. A murder against another human has been committed, and the robots suspect you along with two other humans. The game has an unsettingly atmosphere thanks to the design of the city constantly morphing and the music. As a kid I was sometimes too scared to play the game, but I felt better about it once I wired up the companion robot Alpha. I never did finish this game myself despite watching my brother beat it and watching YT videos. I always loved talking to the robots in the game, who refer to you as "Friend, Derek" and figuring out the laws of robotics and finding ways to talk yourself out of situations and encounters. Given Byron Preiss Multimedia shuttered a long time ago, this is truly a 90s lost gem and I wish more people got to experience it. A perfect choice for a GOG release!
I don't remember much due to aging and depression, but I know I enjoyed this game! A dumb young me could never get past the first room, due to me just not taking it seriously. And probably also low system requirements. But one day I got serious and got past the first room. Lots of cool stuff! I recall I enjoyed the graphics, and the story. Just walking around was fun. I would love for a convenient way to play this again. See it with my adult brain as to properly appreciate it!
I remember my father and I playing through this when I was very young but we never beat it, since the second half of the game is on a time limit and my brother ruined disk 2!! Would love to finally fire this up with a proper PC version and finish what my dad and I could not.
I remember my twin brother and I playing this on our old Windows 98 back when we were little kids. We fell in love with the visual, the gameplay style, and the story! While we were too young to truly understand it, we have many fond memories of playing this game and trying like crazy to figure out how to beat it. And the transit hub music lives rent free in my head to this day - almost 30 years later! We still have the CDs, but since Windows 11 is so much more advanced we sadly cannot play it :(. If this game got added to GOG, it would be like getting struck by a lightning bolt of nostalgia from a time when things were better and life was simpler. GOG is already amazing, and if I saw this in the store I would literally burst with excitement! Alpha, Catherine, and Friend Derek would get new life!
This game was intriguing and interesting! We have always been fascinated with robots and if they'd ever evolve. Being thrown into a futuristic world with them was amazing to experience. I was a kid and never got to finish it as I think I just didn't have the experience and knowledge yet. I hope to be able to play it soon!
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival.
Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed.
The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo.
As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity.
Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control.
