Story:SEGA re-released in 2003 an updated version of Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 called Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Plus.
Early in the effort to run unsigned code on the GameCube, people found that when playing PSO and connecting to a server using the GameCube Broadband Adapter, a regular PC could be made to pretend it was a server which would fool the game.
After making the connection, data could be streamed back to the GameCube, making it easy for hacking and false servers. Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Plus was created in mind to fix this problem. Along with this problem, SEGA included extra content for offline with this game including:
- Episode II Challenge Mode, which was perviously only online.
- Perviously Online only quests, Seat of the Heart, West Tower and East Tower are now available offline.
- Central Dome Fire Swirl, a downloadable quest for the Xbox, is now available offline.
- The downloadable goods from Fake in Yellow quest are now available offline.
Aside from some extra cheat protection, Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Plus ran exactly the same as the original version and all data from characters, items, ect, can be swapped between the two instantly.Show more
Still my favorite of all time (however, it would be nice to have a version with the Blue Burst content available for offline, too).
Phantasy Star Online is a piece of literal gaming history. With the offline playability and the strong possibility of added LAN multi-player functionality on top of the splitscreen co-op mode, this would be a perfect game to be preserved.
This was a unique moment in games for me, where RPGs crossed with a spectacular console generation. Still come back to it from time to time on the gamecube. Still engage in some couch co-op with my bro too. Remember pushing hard into Insane Difficulty - getting our first actual Red Item.
Used to have the physical game guide book and everything. One of the few games we always came back to over the past 22 years now. Never played online, but never felt the need to. the world always was always captivating and everything. One of the only Cyber-Fantasy style games I've ever felt anything for.
Back on the GameCube, Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II Plus was a dream come true — not only did it bundle the original adventure with its sequel, but the ‘Plus’ version added extra offline content that made it perfect for couch co-op and solo play. For many of us, this was where we first learned the thrill of rare drops, grinding dungeons, and teaming up with friends to survive Ragol.
It wasn’t just another RPG — it was one of the earliest true online console experiences, laying the groundwork for future online gaming. Yet today, it’s trapped on aging hardware, inaccessible for most players.
GOG could change that. Bringing Episode I & II Plus to PC, DRM-free, would preserve a landmark title that defined a generation of online play and deserves to be rediscovered by players new and old.

FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival.
Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed.
The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo.
As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity.
Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control.
