ParaWorld

ParaWorld (2006)

by SEK, Aspyr Media, Deep Silver
Genres:Strategy, Sport, Real Time Strategy (RTS)
Themes:Fantasy, Historical
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:The game-concept is similar to "Age of Empires", which is a real-time strategy game. ParaWorld features food, wood, and stone as resources. Food can be picked from bushes, hunted from animals, fished from the sea, or farmed. Stone is located in limited deposits, and wood, cut from trees, is generally scattered throughout a map. Battles can occur on both land and sea. The story takes place in a parallel dimension, where prehistoric life thrives alongside diverse human civilizations that are not technologically advanced. As a result, dinosaurs take the place of traditional wildlife and livestock, though some of the dinosaurs in-game are highly stylized and not necessarily scientifically accurate. Wild-living dinosaurs can be hunted for food, though some are of dangerous and aggressive species and will attack any player unit that wanders too close. Other prehistoric creatures make an appearance as well, for example woolly mammoths are used where other games might feature elephants. Players advance through epochs in order to unlock new technologies and upgrades.Show more

Wonderfoul colors, a music with no right to be this good, a decent Conan Doylesque story, the maps are gorgeous for their time with the occasionnal wildlife to be wary of, you don't control that many units but can neatly see all that you have and what they are doing in a blink. Should I mention THERE ARE DINOS EVERYWHERE? And I've checked: it isn't on sale ANYWHERE. I have a boxed copy from back in the day, it still works, and I would love to see more people getting their hands on this hidden gem.

I remember playing this game and being blown away by the variety the 3 available factions offered (my favourite were the nomads) and freaking dinosaurs. Sadly my disc is now scratched and the game itself became lost media since it can't be purchased anywhere. This program exists for the games such as this one, interesting and no longer available and I hope it can be saved from oblivion.

An RTS game presenting a positive and sunny contrast to all those violent "dark", "gore", "horror" and "superfast" single-player games that are so common these days and still taste bland, despite all the drama. This one has bright and colorful maps, lots of funny remarks by the various units that don't take themselves too seriously, a weird but still consistent story about an alternate reality in which dinosaurs and other animals of different eras never went extinct, and (on the most difficult settings) an unfair AI that nevertheless can be beaten by a determined human couple combining the unique abilities of two different factions. Yes, this one can really be played cooperatively with your partner. It is just the right mixture and one of my favorite games ever for passing a good (and still demanding) time together, not against, but /with/ your friend, leaving you with a positive feeling after the job is done. It is a pity that one can not (yet?) save a multiplayer game, which necessitated us so many times to shut down an unfinished game to finally get some sleep. My wife and I have been playing this time and again for about 15 years now. I basically only stumbled over the game by accident, as the supplementary CD of some gamers' journal, and for some reason had the presence of mind to really grab two identical copies. We still play it to this day sometimes when we have some time to spare. This one is something special and unique, and it should be preserved, in particular since it is nowhere to be found. It was a commercial failure despite good reviews; the company behind the game, SEK, went bankrupt shortly after the game was released. But they still published a booster pack to expand and correct some of the bugs. This game should really become available on gog. For its unique story, for the humour, the low ressources needed, and above all for its unique mode of cooperation. We would really love to see others to have a good time together with this one, too.

Have been playing it basically since it launched. My first ever RTS. And easily the most accessible of the RTS I played in my youth. Once you understand the maps, even hardest difficulty is doable without too much stress once you've built up and planned ahead. The tribe system is great, but I am partial to the Dustriders always. Taslow towers are some of the most high risk high reward things ever. Not to mention the T-Rex Titan. The campaign has not aged well, but I still love it and it works to keep you engaged on each map in a cheesy yet charming way. This game honestly deserves more love, not only for dinosaur fans, but for those looking for unique RTS mechanics. The "Army controller" was ahead of its time. Allowing you to find and command any unit from anywhere on the map instead of mainly using minimap or hotkeys like in most RTS. It creates a bond with your units as you care about each individual and must make sure you keep them alive or replace them so that the death was not in vein. Simply sending hordes to die is not recommended especially since the enemy can quickly repair. It's best to mount proper sieges or send in heroes and stealth units as a commando unit if you want to be more strategic. There is also a community keeping it alive and modding it with new mechanics and animals that take full use of the engine. If GOG can get the rights and then their help, can release the mod officially as DLC or something which will greatly enhance the gameplay loop. We need more games with dinosaurs that actually work well and are fun to play. The recent hype behind the rerelease of Dino Crisis should make that clear.

Really like this game, still have my physical copy! World is sorely lacking in dinosaur RTS. Would be great to own a copy without having to worry about the software key when installing lol.
Nice RTS with Dinos. Nice Story, cool Units. From a german dev team, the development was that expensive and so less sales that it closed after this game... Would be very nice to have it back and play the campaign.
Those games also need your vote!

Overlord
OverlordOverlord is a real-time strategic warfare game where the player must manage large standing armies, economic capital, and political stability throughout a number of extra-dimensional star systems. As the dictatorial ruler of the Epsilon Galaxy, the player has obtained complete, indisputable authority. However, during a scientific experiment in hyperdrive technology, Epsilon scientists discovered four "buffer" dimensions, each containing a number of barren planets that exist between the Epsilon Galaxy and another alien dimension. Unfortunately, the most powerful empires from these alternate dimensions have also just discovered these zones through their own experiments. The player must battle these alien species for control of these buffer worlds, to ensure that their rule in the Epsilon Galaxy remains intact. To make the new planets useful in the player's campaign, they can purchase terraforming equipment which can transform them into tropical Gaian-esque worlds which are ideal for agriculture, mineral-rich and heavily volcanic worlds, desert planets capable of producing vast amounts of energy, or ecologically balanced planets that can support large cities which are readily able to generate significant income through taxation. In addition, the player can mine for resources and tax their citizens to raise money, construct spaceship-buildings to feed the populace, enlist soldiers and equip them, buy battle cruisers or other craft to move from planet to planet, and so on. The player can fight battles, colonize planets, and even spy on alien races. The end goal is to ensure that the other alien races do not gain the upper hand by conquering these four new dimensions before the player can. The player cannot retreat from battle, as the only way to shut down the hyperspace link from their universe to Epsilon would be by vaporizing the player's homeworld, which is where the hyperspace generator is located. Politically (at the very least), this is not an option. Blood will have to be shed for supremacy of the hyperspace planets, and for the player to become Overlord of these four new dimensions plus their own.
