NBA Live 98 -- specifically the PC version, as there were marked differences across consoles -- what a game! I spent countless hours in my youth playing it with friends/family, and to this day I regard it as one of the best video games of all time. I know that this is in part fueled by nostalgia, but there are specific reasons why this game holds merit apart from that:
- the rosters in 97-98 were elite: truly peak 90s era basketball on display, with a sign of great players in the 00s to come; just an absolute sweet spot in time
- surprisingly good AI and game mechanics: a departure from the mid-90s Live titles, playing against the computer actually had a decent amount of challenge, and the controls were robust for the time
- surprisingly good graphics with lifelike face scans of players
- a *very* strong GM mode with the ability to redraft, create teams, create players, make trades, etc.
- great music and play by play from Verne Lundquist
if there were a single title in the NBA Live series to bring to GOG, in my view it'd be the 98 PC version; I'd love to boot it up again! I still have the CD-ROM, but compatibility (and finding laptops with CD players) is always the issue. Crossing my fingers for this one!
