As a kid we never had a lot of money, so when i had gotten enough money to get a new game, for my birthday/christmas (theyre close together) i was ecstatic. maybe 8 or 9 years old?
i was a HUGE Sonic the hedgehog fan at the time, but the only place that had video games for sale, in my smallass town in the late 90s, didnt have any Sonic games.
so i stood there, looking at the meager selection, for upwards a halfhour, stuck between the excitement of a new game, and the dissapointment that they didnt have what i wanted.
so once i had deliberated for close to 30 minutes, my mothers irritation had hit a boiling point, and made me choose.
so i went with the cartridge that had the cool robots.
when i got it home, and popped it in to my Genesis, i found it was really REALLY hard. but looked really cool. cuz robots are cool. and the story seemed to have some interesting deep, lore. but also it was REALLY REALLY hard.
so i would play it until i died. then restart. until i got angry and drop it. then come back, and restart. until i died. over and over for years.
and as i got older i got farther. and farther.
until i beat it. when i was like 15. and it was satisfying. losing pieces of your premade robot body, and stealing others. jumping over rockets. replacing and mixing and matching.
its brutalist, and hard, and a purely unique experience. i dont think that should be forgotten.
(kinda like the dark souls of side scrolling fighting beat em ups) ;)
