"Our ancestors on earth had reached out across the universe, civilizing, enriching... jealous terrorists, 'the league of free worlds' spread vile propaganda, sending death squads to crush and slaughter us. Sealing the warp hole, they fled like cowards, leaving us to die. Nine planets, one sun... hunger, poverty, decay... we turned on each other. This was Sol, and we were it's prisoners. The urge to survive is strong, but if it hadn't have been for Kron, we would have given up long ago. This was the world I was born into..." So begins the story of the sequel to one of the best narrative series in gaming. Where Colony Wars introduced the idea of branching story paths with real weight, Vengeance delivered on the promise of that idea. Mechanically, it's a straight up improvement (if incramental) on Colony Wars. But for years, I hunted down the peice of music from that intro. Because it stuck with me, stayed in my head because I'd played the first game to completion and thought 'that final ending seems a little unrealistic, the second to last one is more reasonable.' It leads here. It lead me to take personally Kron's vendetta, and few things have ever been as satisfying as Mertins narration after we personally put an end to that madman... even knowing he was me. (one game ago.) As one of the first games out there with this kind of depth and emotion in it's storytelling, especially so well connected a sequel to it's predecessor, it needs to be preserved along with Colony Wars. GOG is essentially the only way the two can be preserved to inspire future writers and game developers.
