YES, more like this please.
It's good to see a new (classic) racing game on GOG. More like this.

Low budget and mediocre
I'm a huge fan of classic Need For Speed speed games from pre-Undergound era, so when this title popped into my radar, I was very much intrigued. What sold me on it were the nice-looking screenshots and generally positive ratings from scant few reviews that were posted here on GoG. However, I feel like those reviews are way overselling this game so I felt it necessary to give a more balanced take on it. The visuals are pretty good. Everything looks crisp and colourful, the cars have a decent damage system. The textures and lighting are pretty sharp and vivid too. There aren't any licensed cars here, only facsimiles that are modelled after numerous real-life brands. I didn't care much about the soundtrack either, as it sounds very mid-2000s, but not in a good way. The game does have a decent variety of racing modes but unfortunately, that doesn't save it from the overwhelming sense of boredom. The one thing that a racing game should do well, at the very least, is to make the driving feel fun, but that wasn't the case here at all. The cars feel very stiff because apparently suspension is not a thing that exists according to the developers, and so it feels more like driving a cardboard box. The camera is also completely static even during sharp corners and crashes, so it only adds to the overall dullness of the game. What really annoyed me, though, was the nonsensical save system. I managed to lose my progress twice before I realised that you actually have to go into the save menu and manually create a save file, even though the first thing you do before even starting the game is to create a driver profile. Why doesn't it just autosave your driver profile instead...? Anyway, this is a very bootleg-feeling racer so beware, and don't expect it to be anywhere near the level of quality and polish to merit such a high rating. If you're really dying to play a racing game in this vein, then you're seriously better off emulating NFS: Hot Pursuit 2 from PS2 instead.

GRAB This Game!
'World Racing 2: Champion Edition' is a great modern substitute for any who loved earlier EA racing titles. However, it's career mode has been called central by some reviewers; it IS central, as one can not enjoy more than one poorly selected car and track in single-race mode without progressing in career mode. The career mode order and progression is also the worse I have ever seen in a racing game. Otherwise, my hat's off to the apparently one man who brought this game up to date for us; it IS a BLAST, after cars and tracks are unlocked with another's save file, one can download online. The one I found left the career alone, so I can still hurt myself if I like. Lol. Otherwise, a live rear-view mirror, a horn, end of race replays, and all that the bigshots left behind is here to be enjoyed in this retro racer. It also looks gorgeous, compared to the orginals -- I do not understand some complaints about graphics, but that it IS more a retro redux than modern game. Be warned, it also has primitive aspects of some rubber-banding, arcade driving; but these are also adjustable in the Options menu. It also has no licensed vehicles, in it's newer form here, which is fine with me, as it is a GAME. The competition also consists of maximum five other drivers, which is just enough and is two more than another racer I bought here that was otherwise nice. But I prefer twelve to twenty for competing offline. Finally, why only four stars is the menu and saves are like career mode, rather confusing. Simply go back to profile settings and save whatever you change in-game, and it retains your stats and configurations. The 'demo' is also only for using a keyboard only, and seems no way to change it: Microsoft Rally series had the same defect on pc and xbox, also a retro thing I think. Lol. But the gameplay is the main thing, and is GREAT; so, if you want to go Retro, GRAB this game! Thanks to GOG for this; especially since there are not enough of these here.

Middle ground between casual and tryhard
If you want an accessible racing game that's easy to pick up even on keyboard, with a difficulty around "medium-hard but not unfair", a huge pool of circuits and a well-furnished career, WR2 will get you covered. Though, if you're more into simulators, accurate physics and real-life brands, this might not be your cup of tea. Pros : - Beautiful low-poly map - Good graphics and performance for low specs - Plenty of tracks and vehicles with different physics, and sometimes nitro - Challenging enough to make each victory feel gratifying. Bots take every turn just right, but avoid shortcuts, so decent handling and map knowledge will get you through, even with a keyboard. - Non-racing cars appear on the minimap, and are a serious threat Cons : - Basic physics : No suspensions, barebones car damage, and standing in front of faster opponents is very safe, as if they bump you, you always get boosted straight forward. - No real-life brands - I think the music falls flat. Disabled from start. - Overall, doesn't stand a chance against the giants of the racing genre if you either want something casual or simulator. WR2 is more of a simulator that's lackluster enough to be casual. - In the campaign, some events have you go through up to 5 races in a row. You want to stop after clearing the 3rd? Nuh-huh, you can't save until you cleared the last race of the event.
