2669, Gemini Sector, Troy System. The Terran frontier between the Kilrathi Empire and the unknown. Privateer takes you to the seamy side of the Wing Commander universe. In the far reaches of space, you live by no man’s rules but your own. The fringes are populated by a volatile mix of pirates, miners, mercs, cutthroats, and Kilrathi, all struggling to make a life for themselves.
In this open-ended game you can choose from many paths. You start with a rusted scout ship and a handful of credits in your pocket. It isn't much, but the universe is there for you to explore in search for profitable opportunities. Become a patient, law-abiding merchant, a smuggler far away from the normal space lanes, a pirate preying on the weak, or a professional mercenary hunting down criminal scum. Or just do whatever suits you at the time. At the end of the day, it’s all about money and survival. Mostly money.

One of the Classics
I don't use the term classic lightly, but there is no doubt that it applies to Privateer. It really hit the sweet-spot in terms of combining open-endedness, with a central plot, and marrying it to the (for it's day) solid space-combat engine used in Wing Commander really made it stand out from the other space-trading games out there.

Great game
I have played and loved all games under the Wing Commander series. I hope in the future we call see all the games from the series show up in gog.com. I would still wonder why the series ended in the first place.

Amazing Game
This game along with Strike Command which came on one disk was my first entrance into PC gaming way back when. The open endedness of the mission choices and play styles helped to suck the hours out of my childhood. Could be a mercenary or a merchant and run missions for the guild or just load up a cargo hold full of cheap supplies and find the nearest plant that wanted to pay the most keep the game enjoyable. I don't think I ever "beat" the game per-say and still enjoyed every minute of it.

Privateer
The same commands & content as DOS game. The graphics are a little dated. I have yet to get a crash, on VISTA. Funny, this newer version runs smoother than the old DOS version ever did.
