Then there's the lore. West of Loathing takes place after a major magical disaster: the Day the Cows Came Home. Portals to hell turned the cows demonic, and great darkness spread across the West. West of Loathing elicits this powerful emotional connection with stick figures. It bonds you to its world with nothing more than doodling and dialogue. There's a pretty good turn-based adventure game there, under the hood, but West of Loathing's many strengths are all personal: connections made between developer and player when you both laugh at the same time. Absurdism aside, there's something fundamentally human and direct baked into the game's whole design from aesthetic to script. On top of it, you can dunk your hand into a spittoon of caustic toxins to pull out an enchanted sword. That's the kind of player choice I didn't even know I wanted in a Western RPG.

This was my favorite game of 2017.
(Review from Steam version) I've been playing Kingdom of Loathing for years now, and West of Loathing does a wonderful job capturing the exact style of comedy and brilliance of KoL in a far more animated adventure. The black and white stick figure artwork returns to great affect, but WoL makes these far more dynamic by adding animation. This is a wonderfully funny game from Asymetric, and it somehow manages to just be, well, perfect. This game is perfect. Well... almost. While the gameplay is excellent, the puzzles are just hard enough, and the writing is superb, there is one minor flaw: It ends. (But really, replay value is massive, as it is impossible to see everything in one run.)

Fantastic
A rare example of a brilliantly-written, genuinely funny game. Excellent puzzle design, quests that actually make you think, and fantastically good fun. The main combat was at no point difficult during my playthough and I won most fights with ease, but I'm aware there's a "Hard Mode" that might provide more challenge. The wargame scenarios at one of the forts were pretty good though - you actually have to think ahead and plan your attacks out in those. Verdict: Why haven't you bought this already?

Spittoons
After playing this game I started reaching my hand into every dirty toilet, sewage pipe, and spittoon I could find in hopes of finding treasure. I haven't found any yet. All I've gotten so far are viruses and various diseases. But who knows how much I'll get in life just from this game teaching me that life is about reaching your hand inside the places no one else will. This game is so powerful just thinking about it makes me want to search another crusty spittoon. 10/10, game of the year.
