Way of the Red is a 2d action platformer with a focus on fun, satisfying combat. Splatter blood across the land through four massive zones, each with their own unique environments, characters, and secrets. Use satisfying and versatile sword techniques to shred enemies to pieces. Mutate your character with the mysterious red seeds, and learn new abilities from hidden characters.

You take the role of a downtrodden swordsman of a nearly extinct race known as the birdmen. Years of training and battle leave you unfulfilled and without purpose, so one day, you leave home to discover the fate of your lost childhood love. Your quest for perspective is abruptly cut short when you are shot from the sky by a group of human warriors who specialize in trapping birdmen for use as slaves.

You wake up with your wings clipped and sword confiscated, in a land ruled by a sadistic king who posesses a strange obsession with harvesting the mysterious "red seeds". You come to realize that the fate of the one you've been searching for is intertwined with the king's nefarious ambitions. In order to meet her again, you must get your hands on a sword, escape enslavement, and carve a path of blood to the ominous Spire City.
  • COMBAT - The movement is fluid and intuitive. The kills are satisfying and bloody. The swordfighting allows for many different fighting styles. You are fast, can strike in any direction and can interact with the environment while fighting. String together moves quickly to form elegant and bloody combos, all while smoothly conquering the hazardous terrain as you travel through the gorgeous pixel art environment.
  • WORLD - You start your quest deep in the center of a secluded forest, and eventually make your way to a city in the sky. This journey brings you through four massive zones filled with intricate and attractive pixel art, hidden paths and secrets, and a host of characters who would like nothing more than to describe to you all their woes, or in some lucky cases, teach you new skills.
  • MUSIC - Way of the Red has an exciting and varied score composed by a very talented chiptune musician, Daniel "Zigauche" Stoker. The fast paced music perfectly matches the pace and aesthetic of the action-packed game to give you an incredible, atmospheric experience.
  • ART - Way of the Red is a very visually pleasing game, with many different atmospheres each with their own unique and immersive palettes. The pixel art is colorful, simple, and endearing, with extra care given to creating attractive color ramps and smooth, fluid animations.
  • STORY - Way of the Red is a simple story that can be applied to your own life. It is a story of a powerful warrior who is beset on all sides by strife and judgement. The weak fear you, and the strong want you to fail. To keep moving towards your goals requires an infallible attitude, but what if you go too far? Good but could be more

Way of the Red is by no means a bad game, in fact it does many things very well. The dialogue is decently written it can however be a little cheesy at times, though it does not take itself too seriously so it works out. Gameplay is very simple in the beginning but once you get your weapon and the dash it gets more interesting. My two big grips with the game however is the decision to map the climb and jump to the same button which makes some sections very awkward, I believe that this could be improved with a controller but with the keyboard its slightly weird. My second grip is the games lack of checkpoints, in the beginning especially its very frustrating having to do large sections of a new area then die and realize the last checkpoint was 4-5 screens back. Other then that though there are a few small things I personally find annoying but nothing worth mentioning here. The graphics of course have the usual charm that pixel games have and if you like that art style this game will be something for you, the music is also pretty good and was the thing that kept me playing though the frustrating bits. As the Title says Way of the Red is by no means bad, but it could be a lot more in my opinion.

Subtle

In spite of being somewhat marred by inconsistent hit-detection, finicky edges, attack cancels, state-changes and animation for either player character and monsters - resulting in frequent and extremely punishing unrecoverable mistakes from pixel-wide miscalculations. Where in the end the game sometimes only lets you succeed by tiring out the game's attempts to murder you, rather than by careful use of the dodging, flying and calculated attack mechanics. In spite of that, Way of Red has a very good approach to a puzzle-like level-design, in the sense that you navigate freely between battles and climbing as you wish. Many of the most difficult fights are for example set up so they are probably not possible to win without taking damage - but you could dodge the attacks, jump past and proceed through the level unscathed. Making the challenge often to choose when to attack, and when to dive, take cover, and simply move on. And this is what makes this game refreshing, in spite of it's torturous difficulty, That there's simply a flow to the game that, for all it's frequent stumbling, makes it both entertaining as well as thoughtful. Which, as it happens, also could be said about the game's narrative and writing. Score: Make more games, lone developer guy!

A lot of rough edges

I feel a little conflicted writing this review; this game is a passion project by a single developer and like most people I love a good under dog story - but it's better to be completely honest in these situations. This is a very average game at best, with a lot of rough edges. -The default controls are strange, I was able to remap them in the options menu so not necessarily a problem right - well certain things can't be changed, such as pressing 'down' to interact with characters and going through doors. (there's no tutorial to speak of so I had to mash buttons to find that out) -The main character floats a little bit making some platforms tricky to jump on. -The level design is very 'meh', both visually and in terms of how things are placed in the scene. -The enemies are quite fun to kill in fairness and have different attack patterns that reward good timing. But their visual designs are kind of boring and their placement in the level and how they spawn is also a little weird at times. This is a game that does have some charm to it and it's not terrible by any stretch. But at the same time it's very obvious that this is the work of a single person. A few extra hands or months in development would have done it a world of good. I'm going to give it 3 star instead of 2, because it's so cheap, I had roughly 2 hours of play time and I still feel I had good value for money. This might be worth checking out in a sale if you REALLY love action platformers but be wary of it's lack of polish.

This designer knows what's up

I enjoyed this game thoroughly. I can't speak for the other reviews, I had no problem with controls and there was nothing really super glitchy. what we have here is a game designed to play like a NES era platformer. The influence of Cave Story on this game did not go unnoticed. The engine physics is rather fluid, but I actually like that, the action plays as a cross between Gunstar Heroes and Ninja Gaiden. The art design aesthetic and soundtrack are top notch. The game does leave you wanting more. I will easily play through again a couple times, unsure on multiple endings or secret endings. It's 4 bucks, there's a lot of bang for your buck in this game. Would easily spend on an expansion pack or buy designer's next game.

A good retrò inspired platformer

This is my second playthrough (the first one was when the game first came out) and I must say Way of the Red is a really enjoyable platformer, especially considering it was made by a single person, and it does provide a true ''Nes'' experience with some innovation. In particular, I enjoyed the fact the most of the level design (which is average, but fun enough) has been developed with verticality in mind (since you're a bird and all). So, nothing ground-breaking but certainly a good game right there.
