Initially addicting but unsatisfying
The game has a lot going for it that draws me in: Beautiful pixel art, a pleasent soundtrack, an absurd world, aliens and robot spider mining bases, exploration. But what fails me are the gameplay, some odd design choices and the sound effects. I was sceptical of the negative reviews at first, but believe me that the grind is real. The updgrades to the robospider you buy between sessions are essential to progressing further into the game and after the first hour or two progress towards them becomes a crawl. 20 minutes to barely afford the cheapest upgrade left? No thank you. It wouldn't be an issue for me if you could save mid session but apparently not - when you jump in you either commit to seeing how far you can go in one sitting or accept that this one will just move you a bit forward towards the next updgrade. Imo most of these between session upgrades should be buyable in the session, things like robospider movement speed, the ability to dash, upgrading your missiles. The mining also feels unsatisfying, because it sounds so dull. Add more kick to the plasma cannon and it could be fun. Same issue with the machine gun, it starts out weak and never sounds strong, and killing enemies isn't satisfying either. The only thing that looped me in was exploration and progress, but you have to suffer a lot of repetition to get there - which tbf is common in rogue lites. A big part of me would want to like this game but after a few hours and few days, I just don't. There's a lot of potential here that would just need some polish to make this one a 4/5 for me. Life is short; refuse the grind.
