Great modern adventure, a joy to play!

I played this on Steam when it released and thoroughly enjoyed the entire journey. There were none of the flaws of adventure games - there are no timed sections or twitch gameplay and no puzzles were obscure or ridiculously odd. I didn't need a walkthrough but I did have to think about some of the puzzles for a bit, but nothing too difficult. Exactly how an adventure game should be. The art is beautiful and the characters and voicing are superb. The plot is very good and keeps you engaged throughout. The devs have really put a ton of effort and love into the game. For beginner adventure gamers, this is a must-buy. But it has more than enough for seasoned gamers too. This game should be in everybody's library.

Left me empty

The game looks and sound pretty good. The gameplay-it's rather simple, easy point and click style, item puzzles, combined with a very streamlined, easy interface... My main problems with the game stem from the narrative and the length. It's rather short. And the plot/narrative is one dimensional,clicheed, predictable. There are a few jokes here and there, but it remains kind of dry and unfunny to me. The characters are all very bland. With an over top hard boiled,nihilistic,caricature style detective protagonist, this might have worked- but the one we get seems very empty. Which is a shame, actually. Since most of the voice acting and art is very good. In short: Gameplay: Nothing to remarkable, a bit on the easy side. Art/music/graphics/voiceacting: Pretty damn good. But narrative content, characters, world... that is the point it lacks for me, and makes me kind of disappointed. Despite looking pretty, one of the weaker modern point and clicks for me.

Excellent!

If you are a veteran point and click adventure gamer, you might find puzzles are a bit on the easy side and you'll likely breeze through this in 12 hours or less. This however, is about the only point of criticism. Things are flawless on the technical side, also the double-click-quick-walk and -quick-skip are a q.o.l. blessing. Easy to use interface, great art, great music, decent characters and story. Not sure how well they pulled off the voodoo thing. But to me, a player with no actual real-life knowledge about the culture and religion, it felt very authentic and seemed well done. Not sure how people with an actual voodoo background will feel though. Bottom line: If you like point and click adventures, you will enjoy this! If you are new to the genre, this is a great game to start with!

Secret of the Voodoo Island

It's great to play adventure game where main hero has money and doesn't have to steal all the time. It migh be a silly thing but drives me crazy in these type of games. Other than that Voodoo Detective is pretty, witty and supported by great voice acting. Strong recommendation from me!

Hope this isn't a one and done.

Very much enjoyed playing this, was quite short and compact (took about 6 hours to finish) but with several different excellently crafted locations and a great feel. It sometimes felt a little small and linear compared to say, the Monkey Island series, although for the first game from a small studio, can appreciate that they went for quality over quantity. Story, while perhaps nothing ground breaking was very well done with a few nice twists and well crafted characters. Quickly slipped in to playing as the stoic but (mostly) charming Voodoo Detective. Puzzles were all relatively straightforward & logical (along with subtle hints in the dialogue and effectively an in game guide book) with minimal backtracking and only about 3 or 4 required a little more thought which for some may well be a positive, but a few more steps and less signposted items might have added a bit of length and intrigue to the gameplay... Art style was great, a less cartoony - higher definition Curse of Monkey Island and the voice acting & especially the music were excellent, really adding depth to the world. Was it laugh out loud funny? No and I don't think it was ever trying to be, the game had its foot firmly in the noir setting (in fact I think I preferred it this way to the somewhat comparable Grim Fandango) but it was generally light heartedly amusing and with a few nice occasionally obscure references (fairly sure the bar tender was inspired by Little Richard? and a grave digging Eartha Kitt) and I enjoyed the unexpected puppet show. UI was all fairly well thought out, one thing I really appreciated was that no dialogue options were cut off if you took a certain path in the discussion (although there's not masses of dialogue) and they were simply crossed off to let you know you'd been down that path before if you wanted to talk to a character again. That and the extreme quick walking. Having finished it today, I'm already hoping it's done well enough for a bigger and better sequel.
