To become death in Venetica is a calling, fulfilled by a man of flesh and blood – equipped with special supernatural skills in order to be able to carry out the duties of the office. A new death is selected regularly by “Corpus”, a secret council. This time however Corpus really makes a wrong decision: The “new” death, Victor, turns out to be a crazed necromancer who manages to turn himself into an overpowering undead with seedy tricks and dark rituals and thus attains almost unlimited power in addition to immortality. As it is strictly forbidden for the chosen death to devote himself to necromancy, the committee revokes Victor’s nomination immediately and declares a new death in his stead without delay.
The power-hungry Victor however does not want to relinquish his position again. He continues to practice the dark arts in order to gather numerous dark and dangerous creatures and tainted souls from the underworld around him. He thus succeeds in eliminating the newly designated death and takes over his power for his own purposes. The effects on the world’s balance are calamitous and – should Victor be able to keep himself in power – its dark consequences are irreversible. Only a person who has the same mighty powers as Victor can prevent his prevailing and vent him his deserved punishment.
Scarlett, the daughter of the real death does not know anything about her ancestry and the hidden talents which slumber within her. She is immersed suddenly in this story due to the brutal attack on her home village and the tragic loss of Benedict, the love of her life. It is a story which she now begins to write herself, a story during the course of which she unleashes her capabilities, a story in which she tries to save Benedict from the world of the dead and a story in which she must protect the world of the living from the dark threat posed by Victor and his henchmen.

classic rpg with armor sets, different weapons, skills, magic powers, im still early in the game but its 60fps like butter, and beautiful in some places. Best buck i spent in a while! Wish you could JUMP in this game however, cant crouch either :( cmon man
Where to start with a game like this? It's set in Venice, but not the historical Venice. It's not even clear what year it's supposed to be. For history buffs, there is nothing to chew on here.
As for RPG fans, the game does feature some pretty unexpected twists and turns. Your decisions often have consequences way later down the line that you didn't consider or anticipate when you made them.
But on the other hand there is no build crafting here. Since you're supposed to use the right weapon against the right enemy type, you're forced to become an allrounder, rather than speccing into one particular weapon and combat style. There are no classes and only 4 attributes that raise with each level. They govern your standard stuff like HP, damage output and mana.
Weapons and armor are not gated behind levels, you'll never find yourself unable to use an item. But armor needs to be tailored by a smith, since Scarlett is a woman and enemies drop armor made for men, which is a nice touch.
But you can tell that Deck13 were under severely harsh time constraints when making this game, as it's quite janky at times - but not Pyranha Bytes levels of jank, don't worry. The game has its fair share of game breaking glitches, but nothing that closing the game and loading your last save file can't fix.
The story does end pretty abruptly, all things considered, and you're not shown the consequences of most of your actions, further demonstrating that this game needed a lot more development time.
But when all is said and done, the game is well worth its asking price nowadays. It also has some replay value due to the choices and consequences, and 3 mutually exclusive guilds to join. The graphics are also surprisingly good for a 2009 release and everything looks handcrafted, even if the asset reuse is comically obvious at times.
This one caught me by surprise. I'd never heard of this game before, and I was of the opinion of "well, what the heck, why not?" when it was offered as a freebie for a limited time. I was expecting thirty minutes of blandness and that I would uninstall and forget it existed.
Are the graphics amazing? No. Is the music showstopping? No. Is the story a literary masterpiece? Of course not.
But this game is strangely engaging as a light RPG with good mechanics and good controls. Not PERFECT controls, by any means, but certain more than adequate. I usually enjoy games with much more depth. But this one had me by the ear and I felt compelled to keep playing until I finished it.
While I did get this as a freebie, and the game is cheap even when not on sale, I could easily see paying half again what GOG has it priced currently. This is a $15 game at a $10 price tag. And if it goes on sale, it's even more worth it.
I tend to take my time with games, not getting in any hurry when exploring. So, while the page here says it's 18.5 hours of gameplay (22 hours with side quests), I probably spent a solid 25-30 hours enjoying this little diamond in the rough. I highly recommend it.
I wasn't expecting this game to be so captivating. I was shocked when I saw that Scarlett is a better-looking Lara Croft than the one recently created. The combat system is okay, the setting is alright, and the armor set is very unique. The storyline feels very Fable-ish and Zelda-like; it’s an adventure RPG that’s great to play in 2025.
Simple, yet refreshing. Action adventure with multiple weapon styles, and physical and magic skills. The story is "eh" so far after reaching the first main baddie, but the characters are cool and the female proagonist isn't annoying at all. I always appreciate the more "3D" games. Def has an oldschool feel. I reommend.
