Good, but flawed

Overall, it's a good one. You can be a good guy or a bad guy. Lots of dynamic ways in which the people around you react to or are affected by your decisions. Being a good guy is basically hard mode. You'll never be able to fully upgrade your abilities, and combat is a challenge. Being bad, on the other hand, is easy and means you can upgrade just about everything completely. This gives it replayability value. Pretty good dialogue and an interesting story with a unique take on vampires. Now for my beefs. This game gives off an open-word vibe, but you are continually barred from going anywhere the game doesn't want you to go. Even when you've done enough story missions to roam the map, there are plenty of EXTREMELY ANNOYING one-way gates/doors that require you to traverse all the way around the map to the other side in order to unlock it. The cherry on top? No fast travel. Ever. Not even between safe zones. You spend about two thirds of your gameplay running to and from your objectives. Not to mention the map design is atrocious with dead-end allys and out-of-the-way paths. This, I suppose, is meant to accurately represent 1918 London. Lastly, you need to be very careful when gathering lore collectibles. Just one wrong decision completely hoses your effort to get 100% of them, as I very ungraciously found out. Otherwise, 100%-ing the rest of the game shouldn't be too difficult with two separate playthroughs. As of this review, the game is 4 years old and the developers are still charging $40 for it. I got it on sale, by some miracle. I recommend, if you're interested, that you do the same.

A little bit of good, a lot of bland

For the most part I liked the main storyline and mystery of Vampyr. I enjoyed the references to "oldschool" vampires (like needing invitation to enter someone's home), protagonist's voice and setting (at least on conceptual level). Unfortunately the good parts are rather rare and far between. For the most part you will be doing rather uninteresting side quests and gathering information about mostly boring characters. Which are useful only if you want to ruin the "perfect" ending. Endings themself are "meh" at best as they hinge on forced and rather unnatural love story. Fighting system can bring some joy when you finally get a hang of the combat rythm and perform your dance flawlessly. Unfortunately it is rather repetitive and character progression system doesn't help with that. There is only a handful of skills, their upgrade cost increases exponentially while their effects are boosted in linear fasion. This means you will unlock all of your tools in first 15-20% of game time and will only slap insignificant upgrades onto them later. I'm sure there is a lot of criticism about the main mechanic of the game - drinking NPC's blood to get stronger (because you can't get only a bit, you have to KILL your donor). I'll say it's definitely bad idea but it's possible to just roll with it. It didn't really bother me that much. All in all Vampyr is a game that you can give a shot if you like classic vampires. I don't regret playing and was quite invested but I wouldn't recommend buying it at full price.

Absolutely comfortable delight

A very multifaceted delightful game. Your character is charming but has the capability of going full villain should you choose. The difficulty tied to resting to level up, crafting, choices during quests and maintaining the health of the districts, the fact every single character has their own story or quest, most can be eaten or let die to illness or saved, I've never seen such a perfectly well contained world. I've only small gripes between some dialogue being a bit out of place in it's era and one of the later areas that feels a bit underdeveloped, but the ending is very satisying and rewarding for the choices you make. Absolute recommend for anyone missing story games where your choices impact the world but isn't just a walking visual novel. I'd happily help kickstart a sequel, this world is very very fun.

Good idea not very well implemented

Most of the reviews here are on the mark. The game could have been awesome but felt short in some important mechanics. Some good things about the game: - The environment is relatively well done; - Story seems good. Not very original but can be a motivator to keep playing; - The character interaction is interesting, especially find ways to unveil their background; - Amoral gameplay; interesting outcomes depending on how you play. Things that fell short expectations: - Savegames are saved automatically, which means that when making a mistake you have to either manually backup the save game (by that I mean copying the savegame manually to another file) or start it again. This for me is a MAJOR dealbreaker. Not by itself but because of the way the hint/miss dialogue element was implemented. - The comparison with LA Noire in some comments is spot-on: the dialogues to discover or miss a hint are not logical or rational; sometimes you think that selecting a certain answer will send you thorough one direction but what the character says is completely different. Random hit/misses with a automatic savegame system? Horrible combination. - Combat is meh. Very simple and the skills are not very cool. If the other parts of the game were great, this could have been overlooked (in my opinion). - Treating diseases is cheap and mostly doesn't really affect the NPCs responses. Combination between characters and environment feels shallow. Gets repetitive very soon. I will not continue playing the game because I just lost 7 hours of gameplay half an hour ago because of a lost hint that didn't really make sense (and I forgot to backup the savegame). For those thinking in getting it, the game could be interesting for the first 5 to 10 hours but do not expect much after that. Also, comparing to the available titles in the market, this game should cost $15 maximum.

It could have been an ok adventure game

but somewhere during the development someone decided to put tedious and annoying combat into the game + enemies respawning if you die or rest to level up (yes you can't level up unless you rest). Story is ok-ish but gets dumber by the end of the game, but that would have been fine if it wasn't for the combat, because the tedium of it destroys all the interest you could possibly have in the story as you go. Also, you can talk to people in the streets and find out secrets, but it serves nothing to get you more XP. Most of it is completely pointless fluff and the stuff that is more interesting is very disconnected from everything else you do in the game, so in the end you also do that not to "solve" some side mystery, but to get more XP by sitting through the dialogue. If you do all the sidequests and whatnot, the game is like 25 to 30 hours (if you don't die and repeat much), but like 75% of it is not the story but running around the streets and fighting the same fights over and over. It seems like the whole combat mechanic and RPG elements (the RPG elements are only combat oriented, there are no non-combat stats like stealth or speech or something) had been simply slapped onto an adventure game in development and the game had been remade into something duller than it could have been. Do you want an RPG with Vampires? There's VtM: Bloodlines. Do you want an adventure game with RPG elements or mystery solving? There's The Council or Sherlock Holmes games, Hero-U if you want something funny. Do you want to play something like dark souls with enemies respawning and whatnot, all combat? Yeah there's plenty of titles fitting the bill. Do you want to play some tedious mess of all of the above combined? Then buy this game.
