Army management

You are the general. You have full control over the army composition. Based on your successes and reputation you might get access to more corps, divisions and brigades. Keep your soldiers alive and they will learn to fight better, turning from green rookies to crack veterans. Lose a lot of your soldiers and you might not have enough reinforcements to deliver victories. Your reputation will suffer, army morale will drop and you will be forced to resign.

Innovative command system

You decide which level of control you want. Command every unit individually or just give them a main goal with one button click and watch if they can take that hill. Army divisions commanders can make decisions on their own and help you control the largest army. Draw a defensive line and allocated brigades will defend it like lions. Or design a deep flanking maneuver by just drawing an arrow and send the whole army to the enemy flank or the rear. Your generals will try to fulfill your orders, although "no plan survives contact with the enemy".

Officer progression

Historical unit commanders progress and become better fighters together with the player. The Officers rank up based on their units’ performance, but it's war and they can be wounded or even get killed in action. New ranks open new possibilities and allow officers to lead bigger units without efficiency loss. Winning battles also opens new possibilities for you as a general, increasing skills such as reconnaissance or political influence.

Historical weapons

There is huge variety of Civil War weaponry from mass produced Enfield pattern rifles to rare Whitworths. Historical availability has also been implemented. Certain weapons can only be captured by raiding supplies or taken from the enemy on the battlefield.

Enhanced unit control

Detach skirmishers to send them to scout those hills ahead. Or merge several brigades into one bigger division if it’s needed. Dismount the cavalry to become less visible to the enemy or mount for fast flanking charges and supply raids. Supplies are extremely important and you have to plan and defend the provisions otherwise the battle might end for you early.

Advanced Artificial Intelligence

You will face a strong enemy. AI will flank you, will hit your weak spots and undefended high ground, will chase and cut your supplies and will try to destroy unguarded artillery batteries. AI will use terrain and will take cover and retreat if overwhelmed.

Terrain matters

Trenches, lines, fences, houses, fields – everything can help to achieve victory, if you know how to use it. Hills will allow you to see enemy units earlier. Rivers and bridges can become natural obstacles that will help you to defend. Forests can help you hide your movements and flank the enemy.

Beautiful maps

We believe that modern technology allows hardcore war-games to finally stop being brown on green hexes. Hardcore, deep war games can be beautiful. In our game, every historical battle landscape is accurately hand-drawn, utilizing data from satellite and historical maps. The topography plays immense strategic role and helps to understand how battles were fought and to learn history.

An essential strategy game

This is THE ultimate wargame. While it doesn't have a strategic overworld, it consists of a historical sequence of large named battles of dozens of thousands troops, plus small unnamed battles in between. The troop formations realistically cover most of the battlefield, giving little space to maneur, but maneuring is essential for the win. Sometimes you have to send your wings into the long raids to attack enemy from behind after 30 IRL minutes. You have 4 types of troops to choose: line infantry, skirmishers, cavalry and artillery. You can give whatever weapons you can get to your troops: from muskets to carbines, impacting on their shooting speed and distance, bayonet melee ability. The battles are staged to reflect every historical detail, like the exact time of reinforcements arrival or enemy counterattack. The game is very educational, too; I am a European who only knew that North and South fought for their opinion on slaves question; now I studied tons of articles and books on the American Civil War thanks to all the realistic historical details, troop and battle names, commanders, etc. This game is VERY user friendly, very convenient to control and view the battlefield; also gives you detailed statistics on losses/casualties/wounded/captured after battle. It plays and looks way better than Take Command or Scourge of War. Also if you played UG: Gettysburgh before, that game was rather a demo of ONE OF OVER 20 historical battles in this game. I greatly recommend this game to every fan of history and/or really strong strategy games. 10/10 in its genre. I hope my review was helpful, and sorry for my English.

The best Civil War game I have played

An incredible game. The negatives first: Some historical inaccuracies, CSA campaign ends very abruptly, broken units regroup too easily, difficulty spikes can be pretty hefty. Very detailed, fun to play, and manages to avoid becoming a "force concentration simulator". Thousands of troops, represented by smaller numbers of models, go at each other, with deep mechanics and difficult choices to make. You need manpower to recruit, but you need money to arm your soldiers. Resource management and getting the right equipment is key. If you carelessly get your men killed, you'll find yourself unable to field an army later. You can ask your government for additional supplies, but that lowers your standing with them and lowers troop morale. Morale is very important; wavering units can barely fight. Units can reform easily after being routed, but after taking too many losses (about 80%), they "shatter" and you lose the entire unit. WIll you use your depleted veterans to capture that strategic piece of cover, or will you save them to fight another day? Oh, and Lincoln/Davis is watching. Make one mistake too many and it's game over. Artillery is nicely detailed: Heavy short range guns devastate enemy charges while longer ranged guns silence enemy artillery and harass their units from afar. You can't just spam cavalry; they have no cover and will get shattered instantly if they try to attack an unengaged enemy unit. The sides are genuinely unique, with the Union getting more money and manpower while the Confederacy gets recruits with higher veterancy. Playing as the Union is somewhat easy, as you get so many toys and the best artillery, your men can gain experience on the fly and become unstoppable with their superior equipment. Playing as the Confederacy is a real challenge, as not only do you have to defend (or sometimes even attack) against superior numbers, but you also cannot afford heavy casualties. A must have for any history geek, Civil War aficionado or strategy gamer.

Mostly good but with a couple of flaws

A good game that mostly succeeds in making the player feel like a Civil War general but has a couple of flaws. There is much to commend. As a player you will have to keep an eye on the position and condition of your troops and you usually want to keep a reserve to be ready for sudden changes of fortune. The various types of troops (infantry, skirmishers, artillery, cavalry) all have been given realistic battlefield abilities. Historically successful tactics work well in the game, and the graphics and sound definitely entertaining and put a player in the right mindset. Where the game is not good is when units lose morale. Routed and shattered units should be highly vulnerable and always retreat but instead they become invulnerable and if surrounded they often advance. I've repeatedly seen large routed brigades that were surrounded advance right through one of the formed enemy brigades that defeated them which should never happen. Afterwards the routed brigade reforms in the rear of their enemy. This highly unrealistic feature results is battles becoming a series of scattered minor actions with units facing in every direction because enemies are on all sides. Also, I have a real problem with the Battle of Shiloh scenario. When I played the Confederates captured Pittsburg Landing on the first day and held it against all counterattacks. I had two divisions defending Pittsburg Landing. Then when the day ended the game magically moved the entire Confederate Army a mile or two to the south and put Grant's army on Pittsburg Landing. I got the message that incredibly I did not actually capture Pittsburg Landing even though the 'flag' at that location was Confederate. RIDICULOUS!

Best "Total War" Type of Game

Overall: - this game is all about capture/hold objectives with a timer, not about eliminate ememy forces. - Had great time. I can see myself spend hundreads of hours in this game in the future. Pros: - Really clean pleasant UI. - Good music, sound effect. - Amazing campaign, army management. - Like the tacitical aspect. For most part, just deploy your army, let them do their thing. Cons: - AI is not that smart, small skirmisher in the woods can delay largy ememy forces for a long time and make the game like cake walk. - Skirmishers are king, they are too effective on flank/rear and delay. They are micro intensive, which means if you are doing lots of micro you are going to win way big. - No topography view, please bring 'M' key back. - lots of things are not well explained or not explained at all. Spend some time in forum is highly recommonded. Still nobody knows what supply is, how much should one bring.

Dragged down by Scaling Enemies

The core game itself is alright, the real draw to the game though is sadly drawn back by it though. You can play the campaign with a persistant army which gains experience and salvages guns, you get money and recruits alotted to you which you can use to expand your army and outfit them. Problem is the game constantly scales the enemy to you creating near impossible scenarios except by doing the constant issue in strategy games of exploiting them. It is to the point where it becomes frustrating and unrewarding almost making army manament completely pointless thanks to the game just countering you by providing the enemy ai with more people and gear for upgrading your army.
