Fun and faithful

A fun and faithful remaster of the N64 classic - I wouldn't spend 20€ on it, but for 5-10€ on sale it is absolutely worth picking up (especially if you're into old-school FPS). It has big open levels with non-linear paths, perfect controls, dense atmosphere, great dynamic music and good sound design, lots of weapons, a satisfying selection of enemies and some tough bosses. The graphics are touched up nicely with bloom, weather effects and water reflections. You can pull off Doom-style run-and-gun sprees or explore lots of secrets, alternate paths and tricky jumps - it serves both preferences well. If you take your time, you might get 8-10 hours of playing time out of it. For me personally, a lot of the original version's flaws are buffed out in this remake: A good portion of the fog is gone, you won't get lost or overrun that easily. The mouse/keyboard controls are super tight and some of the infamous trick jump passages are toned done a little bit - there still are some nerve-wrecking jumps, but it's been made manageable now (without crazy strafe-jump leap of faiths). It's still not a perfect FPS, of course. Despite the auto map system and the greater view distances, you WILL get lost in some of the bigger levels, backtracking for keys or weapons, trying to remember which teleporter leads where. The enemy AI is just plain stupid, without the fog you can snipe most of them quite easily or even knife them circle-strafing without taking hits or bites. The respawning enemies can get tedious (there thankfully is a teleport sound to alert you about a respawn) - but there is always enough ammo or space to get rid of them or flee. As a kid, I couldn't beat the game because of the overwhelming enemies and the hard jumps - now, it's lacking a bit of a challenge (although there is no quick save). Still, it feels good to be an overpowered dino hunter... Can't wait for the release of Night Dive Studios' Turok 2 remaster.

I agree with the others, only purchase this game on sale. The pricetag is the only reason I wouldn't give this five stars. Apart from that, I feel like Turok is one of the only older games which you can play at any time and still love it like it just released. buymeacoffee.com/notmiketyson

Glad to see this on modern systems!

I first got into PC gaming as an adult, and my first real "3D accelerator" card was a 3DFX Voodoo Banshee, from Diamond, which came with "Turok - Dinosaur Hunter" as a bundled extra. So, in reality, this game was my first-ever experience with actual 3D gaming. I've still got the original CDs, but the game won't run on any modern system without a LOT of effort. (The sequel, by the way, cannot run PERIOD on anything later than WinXP SP1, as far as I can tell!) "Night Dive Studios" has been buying rights to older games, reworking them (with a significant amount of actual REWRITING OF SOFTWARE in the process in some cases... as in this one) to make old games servicable for contemporary end-users. This game is a perfect example of what they're doing. The "reworked" version of Turok works perfectly on any WinXP, Win7, Win8 or Win10 machine, it seems (though I doubt it would work on Win3x or Win9x machine, which was the original target!) They've done a great job, and it's worth the price. This game is large, and the game world is quite rich and immersive. Yep, it's not 2016-era tech, but it's a blast anyway, if you can get past your condescension levels... and I've been having a great time re-visiting "The Lost World" again after all these years. (FYI... completing the game is challenging, because there's a LOT of stuff you have to find, and you can't complete the game without finding EVERY item you need... and it's entirely possible to complete a level without getting everything you need. Expect to have to go back to each level at least once, unless you have a "strategy guide" with maps showing every single secret, or the like. )

An N64 Acclaim Gem

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a fantastic shooter. It's not particularly deep, but it's a solid entertaining time, and you can really see how the FPS genre was inspired by this game. This PC port is comparable to the N64 version, but with cleaner graphics, and a bit smoother. The array of weapons is good, the soundtrack fast-paced and well-suited, the enemies are designed well, including the bosses. As for some negatives, some of the levels can get a little to labyrinthine for their own good (which can also make it hard to find the keys as well as hinder navigation), and a couple are probably a bit too similar, with there being a heavier theme on natural and tribal settings than more overtly fantastical sci-fi, but nothing too. I kinda wish there was more focus on the story, as the backstory and universe is really interesting, but it's fine without that. Finally, the sound effect when you collect health and triangles can get annoying real fast. To finish, I highly recommend this game! If you're a fan of shooters, this'll keep you entertained for days, and I can guarantee you'll probably only yell at your computer a little. ;) Also, $20 dollars is hardly a steep price. I think it's a perfectly reasonably one.

Dated but Enjoyable

The graphics didn't age well, but the gameplay and even the sound did. The ambiance is enjoyable, the levels are challenging, and the design is excellent. The controls are a little wonky, but once you get used to them it works well.
