A speck of light, deep in the tunnel.
I will preface this review by saying that I owned the Tunnel B1 PC port in the mid 90s and have owned the Steam and now GOG release. Tunnel B1 is thoroughly average yet there is something about this game I find unique and still enjoy, but can never quite put my finger on what it is. There is SOME decent gameplay in here although it takes a while to reach but I expect most people to be put off before that point. NOTE: Swaying movement of the hovercraft you control may cause problems with motion sickness. Story: Basically none. Gameplay: The best way i can describe it is as a vehicular first-person shooter, where you are given a series of objectives in various simple maze-esque tunnel sections, either to destroy, collect or reach a waypoint. These may be timed to hurry the player along or require a certain strategy. The later missions are some of the best requiring careful planning against tight time-limits to succeed. Graphics: The graphics on Tunnel B1 are chunky and detailed enough, however this game cannot be played properly at maximum quality (explained below). Overall the medium graphics are serviceable and not too unpleasant to look at. Audio: The soundtrack to Tunnel B1 is very good and probably the best part of the game. Port: When the game was ported from the PS1 to DOS in the 90s, it was done cheaply and quickly, and then when wrapped in DOSBox there is also another minor issue: - Saving the game is done through the options menu, rather than the main menu for some reason. - Text entry when saving is done with the up and down arrow keys cycling through the alphabet. - Difficulty is controlled from the options menu, not after selecting Start Game, but cannot be changed after starting the game. So set it before you start. - The game installs with medium quality settings. DO NOT change this to high or you will tank the DOSBox framerate, and even upping the DOSBox cycles I always ended up with subpar performance on high quality.
