You are born falling from orbit, a new mind in a body once occupied by the Changing God, a being who has cheated death for millennia. If you survive, your journey through the Ninth World will only get stranger… and deadlier.

With a host of strange companions – whose motives and goals may help or harm you – you must escape an ancient, unstoppable creature called the Sorrow and answer the question that defines your existence: What does one life matter?
Torment: Tides of Numenera is the thematic successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved role-playing games of all time. Torment: Tides of Numenera is a single-player, isometric, narrative-driven role-playing game set in Monte Cook’s Numenera universe, and brought to you by the creative team behind Planescape: Torment and the award-winning Wasteland 2.
  • A Deep, Thematically Satisfying Story. The philosophical underpinnings of Torment drive the game, both mechanically and narratively. Your words, choices, and actions are your primary weapons.
  • A World Unlike Any Other. Journey across the Ninth World, a fantastic, original setting, with awe-inspiring visuals, offbeat and unpredictable items to use in and out of battle, and stunning feats of magic. Powered by technology used in the award-winning Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment, the Numenera setting by Monte Cook provides endless wonders and impossibly imaginative locations for you to explore.
  • A Rich, Personal Narrative. Thoughtful and character-driven, the story is epic in feel but deeply personal in substance, with nontraditional characters and companions whose motivations and desires shape their actions throughout the game.
  • Reactivity, Replayability, and the Tides. Your choices matter, and morality in the Ninth World is not a simple matter of “right” and “wrong”. You will decide the fates of those around you, and characters will react to your decisions and reputation. The result is a deeply replayable experience that arises naturally from your actions throughout the game.
  • A New Take on Combat. With the Crisis system, combat is more than just bashing your enemies. Plan your way through hand-crafted set-pieces which combine battles with environmental puzzles, social interaction, stealth, and more.

How very disappointing

This game had so much potential to be one of the greatest games ever. Sadly, it will instead go down as one of the biggest disappointments ever. The game is way too short. It literally ended just as I was starting to get the hang of everything. I beat the game once and have no desire to ever play it again. Quite frankly I feel duped by all of the hype leading up to the game release. Planescape: Torment is one of the greatest games of all time and quite possibly THE greatest RPG of all time. I played the game to death back in the day and then started playing it again about a decade later. I have logged thousands of hours playing the original. And so you might guess my excitement when I heard that Torment: Tides of Numenera, a "spiritual successor" to the game was going to be released. When I first started playing Torment: Tides of Numenera, I lost interest almost immediately. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the beginning (tutorial) area. About a year passed and I finally forced myself to sit down and play the game that I had paid for. It was decent. Pretty interesting, but definitely no where near to living up to the original. Regardless, I was determined to press on and finish the game. I actually got to a point in the game where the story is just finally starting to pick up and I finally feel like I'm starting to get a feel for combat.... and then... it was over. The game ends way too quickly. The story needed to be double or even triple the length that it was. Do not buy this game.

Unfortunate

Played this at the start, refused to back in itself but once I was certain it was going to happen (instead of most projects) and being a fan of the original Torment, I wanted this to succeed, and finally give some closure or at least a few notes on the original story. Sadly, even that last bit was asking too much. So unfortunately: 1. The Planescape/Torment name and IP was bought to garner sales and nothing else. There's no link to the previous game, and even very few links to the planescape system and world in general in favor of the new 'Numenera' setting. If you're halfway familiar with pen and paper roleplaying: Nobody wants Numenera or asked for it. 2. Anyone that played the original Torment can to this day tell you who the companions like Morte were, down to the point of character quirks, it was that well written. This? Couple months after you played it, you won't be able to name a single one. Buying IPs with no competent writers in-house... 3. As is now common knowledge, the parent company got a LOT of backing funds as most people were wanting a sequel or at least a game set in the same setting as the original, and initially promised as such, started the coding and writing at the first part of the game (Which is.....ok to sometimes good, mostly), then took so much of all the money (And we're literally talking hundreds of thousands and after a certain stage, millions), then half arsed it on the second part of the game, didn't even bother giving it a real finish, and just threw it out there and ran with the cash. Everything, in the latter half of the game, from maps to dialogue to story, feels rushed and uninspired. I guess if there's something like a 75 percent or more discount, you can have some enjoyment of the first few hours of playing. Just expect immense disappointment for the end

Not as good as I had hoped it would be

Backed on Kickstarter, played to completion. Starts strong then runs out of energy. I had no desire to try a replay.

Worthy!

10/10! Okay, a 10/10 score is maybe a little too high, it's more like a 9, but I felt the need to crank it up a bit, because lots of people all over the internet have been unreasonably mean to it in my opinion. Sorry, couldn't help myself. First of all, I get the negative responses for this game, I really do. It can be quite exhausting and the combat is downright terrible. But If, somewhere in your heart, you have a soft spot for Planescape: Torment (The best RPG of all time imo) and/or enjoy reading AND games with an emphasis on storytelling so extreme that the dialogue itself can be qualified as gameplay, you owe it to yourself to play this game. Because it succeeds completely as a Spiritual Successor to Planescape and, even though it is not as good, it evokes he feeling you have/had while playing that game, especially for the first time, in a beautiful way. That is why, over the course of this entire game/book, a warm smile of wonder graced my face, which lasted to the very last letters of the closing credits. The atmosphere and story of this piece just come together and, if you are prone to mental cinema and posess the ability to really immerse yourself, grabs you by the.. you know ...and doesn't let you off the hook until you've finished it. And that makes this game a truly memorable experience. The Arc Words 'What does one Life matter?' will stick with you for a long time after you turned it off. If you want to break it down to one sentence: Torment: Tides of Numenera is ultimately a worthy 'sequel' to Planescape and a, nothing if not sincere, love letter to all the people who truly appreciate the role playing aspect in the so called role playing games.

Pretty good successor to PS:T

Not as great as the original (nothing is 😄 ), but closer than I expected. Disclaimer: I backed the game on Kickstarter I postponed playing this for a long time, because I got discouraged by some negativity I had read online, but when I finally dived into the game, it turned out very enjoyable. I liked the characters, the world, intertwining quests and crazy items. Combat is probably the weakest aspect (mechanically - encounter design is pretty good overall), but still serviceable.
