Dark times mean fear and risks. The risk to be caught by patrolling National Socialists, looking for people who publicly stand against their point of view. The risk of being beaten up or even killed by the German military because we‘re opposing the regime. The risk of losing everything, including our loved ones. This is how we live. This is how we try to survive. Through the darkest of times.
You are the leader of a small resistance group in 1933’s Berlin, of ordinary people, from Jews to Catholics and Communists to Patriots who simply can’t stand aside. Your goal is to deal small blows to the regime – dropping leaflets to spread awareness about what the Nazis are really up to among the people, painting messages on walls, sabotaging, gathering information and recruiting more followers. And all of that while staying undercover – if the regime’s forces learn about your group, the life of each member is in grave danger.
Through the Darkest of Times is a historical resistance strategy game, focusing on conveying the somber mood of the period and the very real struggles of average people living in the 3rd Reich. Historical accuracy means that your small group of resistance fighters will not change the outcome of the war, nor will you prevent all of the Nazi’s atrocities, but you can certainly do everything in your power to save as many lives as you can and oppose the fascist system wherever possible.

Positiv:
* einheitlicher Grafikstil
* gute Geschichte
* 8h Spielzeit
* technische Features vorhanden, Cloudsync, Errungenschaften
Negativ:
* diverse Bugs, Aufgabe verschwindet nicht, falsche Abhängigkeit
* nur Kapitelsequenzen vertont
* recht schwierig (passt aber zur Geschichte)
One out of five stars. That's what it says at this very moment. So it must be a bad game, right? Yes: Far-right. Because that's the root of these one-star ratings. Because the far-right feel caught red-handed. Again. If some group always jumps at anything that has to do with warning about the cruelties of nationalist fascism and anything that has got to do with human rights, it cannot be ignored that there is something to it that they strongly reject human rights, social justice and a free society at all.
There is nothing „controversial“ about this game. It shows what we as a people went through, what „our Vaterland did“ - and how it affected millions and millions of lives.
The game is spot on when it comes to historical accuracy. It delivers it in the exact disturbing atmosphere the events happened in. The presentation is stylish, yet artful. Making the player feel in constant danger in the face of fascist insanity is a far cry from all games that utilize WWII, but ignore the horrors Hitler's regime caused. Finally, may I add.
Of course it wil make the far-right cry (as you can read in the other reviews), but this does not make the game irrelevant (quite the contrary), nor „bad“. Developing the whole thing as an adventure game ensures that the player can dive much deeper into this world than would be the case with a first-person shooter, e.g. With its artful design, self-explanatory control AND the spot-on horrors and the permanent threat that anyone against the Nazi regime hat to face, it is a game that is far more than „just a game“, but an experience that is much needed these days.
some reviews about the game here show sadly that Europe and USA are maybe not so far away anymore from the things that are described in the game. they try to say that Nazis were not as bad as in the game shown or they mourn about parallels in the game to trump that they think are constructed. but did you actually check if Hitler and goebbels did say things like that?
I think it is very possible. and trump does not care if he is using fascist or other authotorian phrasing. he also shows openly admiration for present existing Dictators or authotorian politicians. so please don't shoot the messenger (the game). it is only showing similarities that to many people refuse to see. USA is not yet a dictatorship but trump is on the way there. Hitler and his supporters also needed many years to come to power on 1933. one of the big differences to Germany 1933 is that there are still many people in the US that act against trump and his followers. if there will be much less of them in the future, trump is working on that, USA will be a dictatorship. if you only worked a bit about totalitarism you see immediately the similarities in trumps actions.
When I was a child, youth, and young lady (I was born 22 years after the end of WWII), we could still have neutral, intellectual conversations, like if the Jews were in so much danger, why didn't countries like the US and UK raise the immigration quotas? Answer, they hated the Jews, too, and didn't want them either.
We could talk about the jobs that were created by Hitler, the vacation spots, one family homes, and how he cleaned Germany of the lack-of-morals that extreme liberalism brought - just like it has brought it again today. That everything goes. Everyone has only rights and no responsibilities.
The mindless, black-and-white, anti-Hitler slant is disgusting for me. See, I learned from Goebbels propaganda, and recognize it in any form and THIS is it.
In this game, you play a paranoid, irrational person in Germany starting around 1923. Nothing has really happened yet, and still you start a group to harass a political party. Once things start really kicking into high gear with the Jew-hate (anti-semitism would include Arabs, because they are also a semitic people), gypsy-hate, and so much more, which the bulk of the Germans wallowed in, you still basically do nothing in this game.
Fast forward to the scenes in the game where you are asked if you want to court the Soviets or the Brits. I said I would have to think about it, but was never given the chance to court Soviet help. ???
The intro of the game would have you believe that soooo many Germans were against Hitler. I have lived here 22 years. I got the elderly people in the West back when to open up to me. They had nothing against Hitler, but were so afraid of the Americans, that they destroyed things that had nothing to do with the Nazis for fear of being branded a sympathizer, which they all were. If 1/10 of the people who claim to have fought against the Nazis had actually done so, we would not have seen this era.
The world was never black and white. Not even under the National Socialist government.
Imagine if someone made a video game about The Titanic...but used it primarily to complain about some kind of contemporary political issue.
This game is unsubtle to a ludicrous degree in using the context of Nazi Germany not to investigate history but to make yet another rant about the present.
'Goebbels Wants to Drain the Swamp' is an actual headline they use. Ha Ha.
People actually fought and died in this time period for more than hurt feelings. Believe what you will using poe-faced history as a tool for what amounts to uncreative satire is the height of disrespect.
Beyond this the game has a distractingly crude art style, repetitive music, plays one sound effect over and over, and amounts to little more than shifting around groups of numbers for a better change to accomplish interchangeable missions...which make other numbers go up and down. It's like a mobile game without any sense of progression and relying mostly on luck.
You want historical depth you might find it here scattered around but a lot of the time it feels like a parody of the time or an animated Disney adaptation. I found it tedious and the fact that the 'story' was just more opportunities to make clever comparisons about 'children in cages' killed any of my remaining interest.
