it was okay, the story was probably the worst part and the gameplay felt too linear for an immersive sim, the world design and art style was the highlight for me

"Meh" is being generous.

I got this for free from an Amazon Prime giveaway, including all the DLC. The price was right. I've played every single version of Thief going back to the very first one. All of them had pros and cons. It's hard for me to find pros for this one. I guess the graphics are still pretty good, even 11 years later. The City is cramped and navigating it is a chore. The mechanics of the game are weird. It's like they tried to smash to different visions for the game into one. Plot. Early on, it seems like it makes sense. At the end, you realize it's like three plots that they again just mashed together without resolving any of them. I won't spoil the ending, but I can tell you it's the most underwhelming ending of any game I've ever played.

Trashy

Another pos developer killing great franchises, I put this pos game in the same light that is satallite rain which the pos devs claimed to be a spiritual successor of Syndicate Wars. Seriuosly devs, go f'k yourself before destroying great franchises with poor sequals/remakes.

Not the best, but worth playing.

Thief is one of many reboots resembling the original without truly living up to it. The two biggest downsides compared to the original games are the simple, enclosed levels that lack the exploration fans expected, and the restrictions in movement. You can only jump at specific points, and you can only lean when in cover, making peaking around doors or through drapes difficult. You also can't peak over objects. Other than that, Thief is enjoyable as a slow crawler. Many may critise the repetitive animations that play for every action, picking up gold, opening doors or drawers ect., but they are clearly intentionaly designed to make you move slower and more carefully. With better level design, Thief could have been great, but as is, it is a decent stealth game. Stealth fans should give it a shot, non-fans would be better served trying Dishonored insted.

Way better than negative reviews suggest

... especially given the circumstances the devs had to face during planning and production. Most reviews are highly subjective. This one as well. I enjoyed the game. The art was really good, the atmosphere was consistent, gritty, dark, dipping into creepy, backed strongly by the music. I had no gripe with gameplay/mechanics, though some elements felt less rewarding/focused - but overall it was a solid story and adventure with enough great elements to keep the game engaging, cohesive, interesting and well paced - certainly enjoyable. I would have appreciated a more established storyline for the relationship between Erin and Garrett - which is a focus in the game, driving quest and outcome - as well as for the mystery of the city and the "power" material. (There is a comic titled "Thief - Tales from the City" giving a bit more context - you can find a decent read on Youtube.) The side characters were neat - I even would have welcomed more interactions between e.g. Garrett and Basso or the Queen of Beggars, learning a bit about their turfs and ways. The City itself.also deserves mention as a character. My only real gripe is the tiresome traversing of the city, usually from one far end to the other and back. I enjoyed the sneaking, and would not have resorted to fighting in a stealth game, if the following was done right: The city is a big, higly patrolled, segmented maze, with not all showing up on the map. Challenge for wayfinding is truly fun (at first), but once found - with such scale and frequent back&forth tracking (esp. with side quests) - indicating crucial segment passages would have meant a lot less slog for me, and better chance of replay. That said, main missions each have their own huge one-time maps, so there's plenty exploration. All in all, I found this a good game on it's own terms. And if there will ever be a next Thief game, I hope it will be an even better one.
