Flawed by design, but a masterpiece.
The Witcher 2 is a different kind of game. I had been gifted the Witcher 3 on Steam, and I bought the enhanced edition here on GOG on sale for $10. The game's voice acting, dialogue, and graphics are all truly wonders to behold; masterpieces like Skyrim and Dark Souls cannot live up to it. On a technical level, the game is great, with keybinds and controller rebinds. I was still disappointed you can't bind multiple controller keys for one thing. The "special action" must be bound, but I never used it. The story is detailed, challenging, and engaging. Every moment felt important, even if I was dumping down harpy traps or blowing up nekker nests. Characters like Triss, Roche, Iorveth, and Letho are all unforgettable and have unique personalities, more so than any game I've played. The ending is satisfying, no matter what you choose in the end, and even something as small as gore and sex scenes are done well with a great deal of maturity, unlike Bioware's silly animations. There were a few things that bothered me, but did not detract from my experience. The combat is clunky, very much how clunky Dark Souls was, only you are rewarded for spamming the dodge key frequently. Upgrade trees are highly offence focused, and you often ignore the other perk points. But this doesn't mean combat wasn't engaging. One thing that bothered me was a perk that allowed you to hit multiple enemies at once, something that should be available from the start. Lack of fast travel made backtracking through levels, and side missions felt rewarding, but not as important as the main game. I still respect the developers, but it felt more restrictive and disagree with a design choice. This game used to be $50 and was likely dwarfed by other fantasy giants at the time, Skyrim and Dark Souls. I've played all 3 games for at least 60 hours, and I can count on 60 more hours from this game for the branching endings. Final verdict: Buy this game at full price.
