High-point for Settlers but room to grow
Settlers 2 is a great village management RTS game. The combat plays only a minor role in the gameplay, as economic management is at the core of the game. The game is about careful choice of the placement of buildings; design of road network; order of construction; resource prioritisation - and stuff like that; which if done well will lead to a strong military, allowing you to defeat your enemies. (Or if you like, you can play without any enemies and just have fun building a village.) It's a great game, but it does have some shortcomings. For example, the AI is pretty weak, and there are some cheesy tactics that can devalue some of the tactical side of the game. But these issues are only relevant once you've played for a long time! After Settlers 2, the Settlers games changed direction in a big way. The style of gameplay in S3 and beyond is very different. So if you've enjoyed Settlers 2 and are looking for more content in a similar style, try the open-source game "Widelands". It's very much like Settlers 2, but with more variety in the different tribes, and better balance. (And it is still under active development.)
