The Secret of Monkey Island™: Special Edition

No other adventure game has as many ports as the original Monkey Island game. It was on everything...There was CGA version a EGA version a VGA version and it was on just about every console of the time... What I feel has greatly improved is the ambient noise. The background sound effects are extremely relaxing, which is something that you'd want to find in a game when wasting away all your precious free time on video games... It comes with a beautiful sound track, relaxing ambient noise ( So good that the ambient noise is actually on youtube as ASMR videos... lol) The voice acting cast is top notch... If you love the voice acting from the third game, then the SE should be enjoyable because it's the same actors from the third. The voice acting really enriches the experience and brings out the humor of the original game that is really dry without a voice. The guy who voices Guybrush is simply a genius, and his voice adds liveliness to the game. Some of the graphic choices bother me, like the close up protraits... I prefer the originals... but the rest of it doesn't bother me...(Elaine and Guybrush's close up art work was gorgeous) The original pixel art, where as it's charming and I grew up with it, having been born in 1987, It does sort of strain my eyes now and the new/ crisp clean graphics actually look pretty good. Over all it adds to the enjoyment of the game for me. A clean, fresh looking game. Also, I want to mention that the SE has more atmosphere, moving clouds, fog, lightining... When you switch back and forth between SE and the original you realize how flat the original art work is... it lacks the lighting, the ambient sound, it lacks extra details that are present in the environment that only add to the liveliness of the game... Over all I find the SE version to be the most lively and relaxing version of the game. I actually put on my headset, got into bed and just relaxed listening to the ambience of mele city. This version is good.

I've never played this before so there is no nastalgia factor with my opinion, I had never heard of these titles before the sea of theives monkey island tall tale update. so far the gameplay is pretty solid, i do tend to agree with some of the other reviewers that the verbs system is a little difficult to get the hang of which required me to switch to the original where the verbs were displayed, which brings me to the sencond part of my review, they held so close to the original title that it actually is running the original game along side the remastered verion at all times, if for watever reason you arent happy with the experence simply pressing F10 will switch to the classic game with your current progress right down to the characters position. the only reason i dropped one star is becuase i spent several hours attempting to get this game working on the steam deck with no luck, idk if its a linux/proton problem or a steamdeck problem but i couldnt get it past a white screen or crash

This game is a childhood favorite of mine. I would get home from school just to replay this every day for almost a year. This reimagine of a classic game is not so great. To start with the good points are the music and the voices do the original game justice The bad pouints in my opinion is the new graphics are not so great and are harder to look at then the original graphics. But overall a great game and a must play for adventure game fans

A very witty and creative game, full of entertaining banter and character interactions, as well as some pretty ridiculous sequences (it's pretty obvious it must have been a lot of fun designing this game). If you're looking for a silly, pirate-themed, adventure game, this should be right up your alley. Part of the key to success in this game is an open mind and a curious spirit — no idea should be considered too crazy or foolish for a game where you play a character named Guybrush Threepwood. You don't need to be a brainiac to solve the puzzles; they really aren't that cryptic, but you do have to pay attention. Like others, I kind of favor the original artwork over the cartoon-y remake, and as I play games on my computer rather than on a gaming console, it does feel a bit clunky having to open the verb menu and inventory instead keeping them at the bottom of the screen, but I think it's probably tricky trying to find alternatives ways of supporting so many verbs without taking away the user's ability to solve the problems on their own due to being fed the solutions by a cursor which automatically reflects the necessary action that should be used, and I think the solution used here was due in part from trying to keep multiple platforms in mind.

This Point-and-Click Adventure is certainly a product of its time, and that's both for good and for bad. First thing I did when I figured out that I could was press F10 to switch to the original version of the game, and I recommend this; the new version has a terrible interface, and the graphics... well, I didn't think that there was a digital uncanny valley, but this is it; it's kind of like a cheap Flash game from 2001 or so, but also creepy? I'm glad you aren't stuck with that, in any case. Playing the classic version, I had a good time; it's like many games from its time, but a bit more intuitive and with a friendlier user interface, especially compared to the old text parsers. The visuals are absolutely stunning; the most important thing to me in a game like this is its world, and it absolutely delivers from start to finish. The puzzles are mostly pretty reasonable, but the used boat salesman was a frustrating mess that worked only when it was good and ready. Learning to "master the sword" was a bit grindy, too, but at least the actual combat wasn't a clunky mess; it was actually pretty clever. Overall, a pretty short adventure, but a very memorable one.
