Modern society owes much to a mystical technology known as “orbal energy.” Fifty years ago, during what’s come to be known as the “Orbal Revolution,” the invention of this technology and the “orbments” developed from it led to a period of rapid human advancement, birthing innovations of all shapes and sizes -- not the least of which was the airliner, or “orbalship” industry. Although the positive impact of this revolution is obvious, every coin has a flipside; for every beneficial device developed with these new materials, so too were advanced weapons and other implements of war. Thus, the land became mired with turmoil, and remains in such a state even now.

Enter, the bracers: an organization established to serve as police and intermediaries alike, holding above all else the peace and safety of the lands under their jurisdiction. Whenever a citizen is in need of assistance, he or she may place a request at the local Bracer Guild -- and be it monster extermination, crime prevention or even peace talks among warring nations, the bracers will do whatever they can to resolve the matter cleanly and efficiently.

Some matters require a gentler touch than others, however. When an orbalship transporting a legendary "S-rank" bracer named Cassius Bright suddenly goes missing, said bracer's daughter, Estelle, and adoptive son, Joshua, must join forces in search of him across the entire Kingdom of Liberl.

And what they find along the way could change both of their lives forever...

Hailed as one of the largest, longest and most meticulously detailed turn-based JRPG series of all time, this first chapter in the ongoing Trails saga sets the stage for what's quickly become Ys developer Nihon Falcom's most popular and best-selling franchise in their entire 30+ year history. Introducing people, places, ideas, events and lore that rival in complexity those of even the most highly-regarded fantasy epics in literature, the care and attention given to each and every NPC, location and historical in-game event is what sets The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky apart from its contemporaries.

Come join Estelle, Joshua, Scherazard, Olivier and the rest of the cast as they uncover the secret underbelly of Liberl in their first 50+ hour masterpiece, and see what Japanese gamers have been raving about for over ten years.
  • Classic JRPG with over 50 hours of gameplay, strategic turn-based combat, and countless side-quests.
  • A vast world where every NPC has a name and personality, every town has its own unique politics and economic concerns, and no detail is ever trivial.
  • Widescreen and USB gamepad support, selectable difficulty and new game+ features.

An epic VN disguised as a JRPG

The "Trails" series are an epic world-building narrative series, focusing on the geopolitical events amongst the Zemuria continent. I won't say too much here, but you should only get this game if you're willing to go through a slow story to begin, for an epic payoff. The JRPG elements are nice, but they are not really the core of the game. Of all the narrative and world building games out there, this is arguably the best series, so do give it a try if you're interested in narrative gaming experiences!

And to think this is just Chapter One...

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (hereinafter referred to as simply "Trails") is part of a long established trilogy of titles that saw release from 2004 in Japan, a PSP release worldwide as of 2010 and now this lovely PC edition from Nihon Falcom (localized for English speakers by XSeed). Trails is a game absolutely dripping with meticulously crafted lore and detail. Every NPC has their own name, their own lines of dialogue and their place in the game world including a very distinct personality (I kid you not). In terms of overall story and without spoiling too much, let me leave you with the fact that this tale concerns a journey of self-discovery inflected with loss, betrayal, conflict, political intrigue and expertly placed twists. The game events do take place in one kingdom, but it readily becomes apparent that the stakes in Trails are too high for this virtual real estate. As per the game's description on its store page, you are in for a strategy JRPG with turn-based elements that take part on grids during combat and isometric traversal during routine travels on the map. The combat system here is very nuanced and EVERY MOVE COUNTS. Even simply selecting move to a tile without an accompanying combat action can spell the difference between stealing an enemy turn and making more moves than normally allowed or simply dying. Aurally, Trails has absolutely superb music all around that fits into every village, town and city you visit. However, the combat tracks are the real draw here. Then again, what else can anyone expect from Nihon Falcom? (for reference do take some time to listen to tracks of their previous work in the Ys series of games). When you get to the end of this very worthy game, you'll realize that this tale is far from over... And the resolution for this chapter is simply stellar. Localization for the last two should be ongoing, but for now, do NOT miss this chance to grab Trails right here on GOG. This is an essential JRPG purchase.

Best game of the series

I've played several games, if not all, of Trails saga, and others, and this seems the best of all for me. The way the story evolves and how your characters travels from mission to mission and grows feels just satisfaying. In following games I just don't feel so involved, though they're all good games.

Good JRPG but with one crucial flaw

The game itself is pretty good. The characters were funny and interesting, the battle system (a mix between old final fantasy and final fantasy tactics games) was interesting and fun and the music was nice. But here comes my big warning to all who are still unsure if they want to buy the game or not: The game has an open end! In the end you see a trailer for the second game which, according to wikipedia, will come out later this year. If you don't mind this and some pretty long dialog sequences then you will have fun with this game. Myself i can't wait for the sequel and i hope it will also be avaible on GOG

Perfect if not for its...

...way too long and extremely frustrating ending. After spending so many hours with the protagonists, solving all kinds of mysteries and revealing more and more of the conspiracy we find ourselves face to face with... more hours of pointless and boring grind in an never-ending underground dungeon were all we do is collect orbs and lvl up in order to face the final boss. Fine, whatever, is not like I wish for more story, more character development, more of what already got used with through the entire game. No, I'll just grind myself for couple of hours without any of that, at least the final boss will be worth it, right? RIGHT!? Oh boy. I'll not gonna spoil the "fun", but let's just say the words "hell" and "go to" will pop up in your head at least once, if not each time you foolishly believe is over and then get a complete party wipe just so you can... restart the entire thing, and I mean the ENTIRE THING! Yes, the memories of the ending made me question if I'll ever play another game in the series. It absolutely ruined the entire adventure, the fun, the story, the game itself. Did I mentioned how HARD is the ending? No? Well, you see, the huge underground dungeon is there for a reason. To GRIND, and you will have to grind and grind because, if you dared to actually play the game as a game not as a grindfest then your level is way to low for the final boss battle(s). That was a conscient design choices. The developers knew that many players will reach the ending underleveled and, instead of lowering the boss fight difficulty, decided is more "fun" to add 3-5 entire Diablo levels for you to grind for a while (2-3 hours) and lvl up. Except for this extremely annoying decision I have nothing but praise for this game. And even with this miserable ending I can say, PLAY IT, it's worth it. Just don't rush it, and make sure you lvl up your orbs (area heal, area stonewall) or you'll gonna have a bad time.
