FULL DETAILS

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker is a Lovecraftian FMV murder mystery, which gives players full freedom to question suspects by typing their own questions instead of picking them from a predetermined list. There are no point and click puzzles to solve, just questions to ask and evidence to inspect.

Finding out who killed Dr Dekker is only one part of the puzzle; working out how to fix the chaos he left behind will be so much trickier… As well as providing clues to the murder, each patient has their own bizarre problem they need your help with – from time manipulation and re-animated loved ones to horrors under the sea.

Complete with an atmospheric soundtrack, The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker invites you to explore the shadow reality that your patients inhabit – a world full of paranormal strangeness and horrors that go bump in your head, where all you have to rely on is your own mind.

Just try not to lose it...

FAQ

How do you progress through the game?

You play through a series of five therapy sessions. Each session you'll talk to several patients, and traffic lights tell you which patients you've unlocked so you can move on. Yellow is unlocked, but you can keep talking to reach green and find all their possible responses. On the final accusation screen you choose whodunit and if you've picked correctly the game finishes and plays your ending videos. Automatic saves mean there's no way to rollback something you've said to a patient, so be careful with that. That's it in a nutshell, but we can't tell you everything, or there'd be no surprises...

What happens if I ask a question they don't have an answer for?

As long-time fans of FMV games and point-and-click adventures, we're all-too familiar with the 'That's not gonna work' or 'I think I'll have to try that again' phrases repeated over and over. That's why we've given the patients lots of different ways of saying "I don't know" - most have over 40 in fact, including some that contain clues that lead you to new storylines.

Is this game an AI simulator?

No. A lot of the time you might get "don't know" answers to your questions, because there are only 1600+ actual filmed responses in the game. Listen to what patients say and follow their lines of conversation to stay on track. Responses are keyword based, so literally typing words patients have already used will do half the job for you.

How many acts are there?

There are five acts in total. Each act is a self-contained episode, so it's possible to ask questions (and get responses) in any order to reveal the story. Some decisions you make will affect future acts, so once you hit the continue button there's no going back!

What if I get stuck?

We've tried to design the game so you don't get stuck, but if you do, just type 'Hint'. Think of it as asking for advice, and you'll need a lot of it if you're trying to find every response (aka going green). Make sure you've properly watched the help video too. The new 'suggested questions' list also gets you to the finish line without having to type anything.

If the murderer is chosen at random, does that mean it's replayable?

The game can be replayed, but it wasn't designed with that in mind. We wanted everyone to be able to experience as much of the game as possible without needing multiple plays, so branching generally removes just a few responses at a time. That said, you will have to replay the game if you want to find *all* the videos and unlock all the endings.

Finally, a great FMV game

I mentioned this game in another review praising it as an example of an FMV game done right. I say that for a number of reasons, first being that it for being mostly cutscenes it does have its fair share of interactivity and freeform gameplay despite its limitations. There are a number of ways to pose questions and phrases, and sometimes a little difference can mean a lot. Sometimes it's even best not to say anything at all, and knowing when to speak or not is half the battle (though admittedly you'll speak more often than not). The game does otherwise give the option of simplifying your run by typing certain important phrases, but what's the fun in that when you can get an out-of-nowhere answer that's not even related to your question? It can be fun that way. Which can be a problem, admittedly, as the text entry, as freeform as it is, is still limited and can sometimes read your response wrong, or think you're answering to something when you're not, or not even accept an answer to a question you're trying to answer. It's not frustratingly bad, but it can hamper the experience for a bit before you're back on your way. It's like troubleshooting a computer in that sense, but you're talking to people. Which, I will admit, while I wouldn't call any of the actors bad, some are better than others, but I'm willing to forgive that due to the tone of the game and its purpose in being a Lovecraftian sci-horror satire. That's what is more important is the story overall holds as actually being pretty solid overall. It's far from amazing, but for what it's going for it works more than well enough and I'd recommend it for its clever ideas and execution of them alone. So, the story isn't the absolute most amazing, but considering most game stories tend to be awful, even the highly-praised ones, that's a serious compliment to this game. With it's unique, if also slightly flawed, gameplay mechanic, it's an obvious recommendation, especially at this price, well worth it.

Best FMV game I've played

In order to enjoy this game to the fullest, you shouldn't take the "text entry" of it all too seriously. Also, I highly recommend relying on "hints". It can be a real struggle to find out how they want you to phrase a question you need to ask. And sometimes the "hints" will tell you to ask something, and then the patients will give you an answer unrelated to what you asked. Another point I should make: The game mechanics aren't explained well. It can me tough to see how your actions relate to certain outcomes, and what evidence points to the final culprit. But just about everyone in this game is an unreliable narrator. That being said, this is a phenomenal Lovecraftian game, and probably one of the best FMV games I've played.

Welcome to Parser Hell

Let me start by saying I've only played through the full game once, but there are several possible endings. The story is interesting, creepy, and weird all at the same time. But the text parser just killed the experience for me. You're supposed to be able to type fairly open questions into the text box, but it rarely worked for me. Even simple questions would get one of the "nope" answers; this even occurred when copying syntax to match the notepad. In order to get the game to move forward, I had to try things such as leaving all the punctuation out and cutting words out of sentences that you'd think should be in there. "Yes" and "No" answers never worked when I just typed them in. I ended up using something like 900 "hints" from the drop-down menu because I got so tired of fighting with the parser. It's also difficult to tell right away if someone is fooling you. That's because inbetween questions the characters randomly fade in and out on the screen, so you can't read their faces. I guess I've been spoiled by games such as "L.A. Noire," where you have to read people's faces in order to properly solve cases. I'd say if you are patient enough to deal with the game's technical issues then give it a try for nothing more than the decent video production.

The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker

I enjoyed this game in every aspect. I am a fan of the old Text adveture games of the 80s and the fmv games of the 90s, so this is the perfect blend for me I recommend this if you like either of those genres.
