Beschreibung
The year is 864 and Tiber Septim has begun his crusade to establish an empire in Tamriel, conquering all who stand in his wake. Though the Redguards of Hammerfell put up a valiant fight, they eventually crumbled to internal mutiny and the might of the Septim forces. Now under Imperial control, the Redguards are kept in line by the oppressive rule of Septim’s retainer, Amiel Richton. It is within this setting that Cyrus, a Redguard mercenary that has travelled Tamriel for over a decade, begins his adventure. Investigating the disappearance of his sister, Iszara, Cyrus is brought back to Hammerfell and thrown into the political intrigue that besets Hammerfell and its inhabitants. In his search for his sister, he must also play his part in this war between the Crowns and the Forebears.

Set 400 years prior to the events of The Elder Scrolls: Arena, Redguard contrasts with the other games in many ways. As a third-person action-adventure game, it removes its RPG gloves and instead focuses on bringing you on an immersive journey through the eyes of Cyrus. If you’ve wanted to try the Elder Scrolls series, but haven’t quite enjoyed the RPG elements such as character building and customisation, this is definitely the game for you. But, despite taking a different path, this addition still contains many of the elements that the Elder Scrolls series is renowned for: a vast world, lore-laden narrative and compelling characters. So, whether you’re a native or a newcomer to Tamriel, this swashbuckling adventure will keep you captivated to the very end.
  • Thrilling adventure rich with lore, dialogue, backstory and atmosphere
  • Explore the Island of Stros M’kai, from the darkest catacombs to the highest towers
  • Non-linear story progression, allowing you to explore the world at your own pace
  • Put your wits to the test by solving puzzles and uncovering the mystery of Iszara’s disappearance

something mustve been changed.

i avoided the game due to all the negative performance reviews but recently decided to buy it anyway having feeling nostalgic after watching a 3 hours Daggerfall documentary on youtube that mentioned Redguard. i loaded the game just to see for myself how bad the performance is and i was surprised to find out that it runs no differently than how i remeber running it with my 3dfx. movement, camera angle, combat, etc are all smooth. one thing that i didnt remember being as bad is audio. it sounds a bit crackly to me. maybe its the dosbox, or maybe i'm remembering the audio better than it actually was. anyway, if the reported performance is the only reason you stayed away from this game then i think you should revisit your decision.

Fun Historical Curiosity

Largely forgotten, this interim addition to the Elder Scrolls canon features unbalanced game-play, outrageous controls and irregular graphics.* Nevertheless, a patient and curious gamer will discover a lot of plucky Bethesda charm within a lighthearted story; not to mention some fun and unique puzzles and surprises. Most intriguing to me is how the game represents a decidedly transitional moment in gaming, not only technologically (though an odd jump featuring a lot of vestigial elements: KB-centric controls, rudimentary facial expressions, etc, is very apparent) but also in the development of Bethesda's and more importantly, the Elder Scrolls series' character. The game itself may be seldom referenced but fans will note items and elements of Redguard that remain distinct in subsequent titles. *Gog-gers have fairly noted that emulation issues may be responsible for some of the game's inconsistencies- honestly I don't remember the game running or looking any better when I played it years-ago and my nostalgia filter is very rosy indeed, but it's a distinct possibility. Caveat emptor.

Only for diehard Elder Scrolls fans

Think Tomb Raider with lots of jumping puzzles, repetitious clunky sword fights and long dialog trees. If that sounds fun to you, you may like it. It's a 1998 game so graphics are what they are but the controls are awkward and clunky. The story is there but you have to sift through tons of garbage conversations with mostly bad voice acting to get to it. I'm a big fan of the Elder scrolls world but this was just not fun.

Another potential framerate fix

I haven't seen this one suggested anywhere and it's the one that finally worked for me, so I figured I'd share it for posterity. Open dosbox_redguard.conf in the installation directory. Find the line "cycles=max" and change it to "cycles=51000" (without the quotation marks). It's not perfect, it requires tweaking in-game using cycle up and cycle down (ctrl+f11 and ctrl+12), but it is miles better than how the game comes from GOG. The magic number seems to be somewhere in the range between 50000 and 80000; this might depend on your PC as mine isn't very powerful. For me, as the cycles approach 80000, the framerate gets smoother but the audio stutters more and more, especially during combat and dialogue.

Great Game, If Only it had a good FPS

This is a great game. I never played it until now and despite the framerate, it's pretty good. The problem with the game performance comes from the emulation of VoodooFX's GLIDE renderer. Unlike most WIndows 95 games, this one was uses an engine that was built for DOS and adapted but not optimized for Windows 95. Natively, the engine runs in Windows 95 DOS mode with features from Windows added in like the VoodooFX GLIDE library. However, since we've moved passed the days of both DOS and VoodooFX it is almost impossible to get this game running at a good framerate. Like most software rendering modes, it just isn't compatible with todays technology. Heck, try running Half-Life 1 in software rendering mode and it will crash. This current port emulates the VoodooFX GLIDE library so that it can be at least somewhat playable. However, if you want this to run smoothly, you better get a vintage Win 98 (98's more stable) computer and put a VoodooFX card in it. Otherwise, this is the only way to get it working without having to re-port the engine code, which I assume either Bethesda lost, or GOG doesn't have the time to do a proper re-code, which could take months or even a year or two which is something GOG doesn't do anyway. But if you don't mind the very choppy framerate, this game is very good.
