GESCHICHTE
Unruhen ziehen durch das Königreich Myrtana, ein Reich, dessen Grundfeste durch die Wirren des Krieges erschüttert wird. Erlebe die Ereignisse, welche den Grundstein für die originale Gothic Handlung gelegt haben und werde Zeuge davon, wie die Erschaffung des Minentals Menschen fernab vom Festland beeinflusst hat.
Setze ein Zeichen in einer brutalen Welt, in der jede deiner Entscheidungen einen Einfluss auf das Umfeld und auf die Menschen hat, die dir auf deiner Reise begegnen.
Spiele als Marvin, einem jungen Mann, der vor dem drohenden Krieg in seiner Heimat nach Archolos flüchtet. Leider ist auch die Insel nicht das, was er erwartet hat. Reiche Händler, die stets nach mehr Gold trachten, engstirnige Diener Königs Rhobars II, die alle Gesetze vollstrecken, sowie massive Flüchtlingswellen, die ebenfalls auf der Suche nach einem besseren Leben sind, nehmen ihm die Illusion von einer idyllischen Insel. Marvin ist gezwungen, einen Weg zu finden, um in dieser Welt voller Verrat, Opportunismus und gegensätzlicher Interessen zu überleben.

This is a standalone, masterpiece of game experience that anyone who enjoyed G1 or G2 will thoroughly enjoy as well.
The amount of details to the plot and surrondings, story lines, characters, options, depth is mind blowing. At times this game made me laugh and made me care for the characters.
Big kudos to the dev team and everyone involved. It's an amazing and engaging game that took me back somewhat 20 years into the past, to the time when I've watched my older brother play G2 on PC and the picture of him crossing the bridge to the fire mages' monastery inprinted into my head.
After just over 100 hours I finally finished this masterpiece. Without a doubt, CoM: Archolos is the best thing to happen to Gothic since Gothic 2 itself. The amount of quality content here is nothing short of breathtaking, and puts many full priced AAA games to shame. The fact that it’s free makes it feel as though I’m stealing.
The sense of progression is classic Gothic on steroids, and the numerous quality of life enhancements make it feel as though I’m playing Gothic 2 for the first time again. No longer do you need to min max in order to stay afloat, but you can and will be rewarded if you choose to. Still, what really sets Archolos apart is the storytelling, especially with its many characters. By the end I felt really attached to the world and the inhabitants the team created, and it all ties wonderfully into the larger Gothic universe without too much fan service.
I encountered a few minor bugs here and there, but nothing game breaking. Honestly, there’s more polish here than in many recent AAA titles. It’s insane what the developers accomplished.
If you’re a fan of Gothic, you need to play this. If you’re a fan of open world RPGs, you absolutely should play Archolos, as well as the original Gothic games of course. It’s a prequel, so you technically can play it without having played Gothic first, but you will likely get more out of it with some familiarity with the setting. Either way, CoM: Archolos is a must play!

Engine might be a "few" years old, but this does not matter at all. The game is fantastc, not to mention huge. A mustplay.
Those of us who were around to play Gothic 1 and 2 when these games first came out know that there was nothing quite like them back then in terms of sheer atmosphere and immersion. The experience of exploring the Valley of the Mines and the island of Khorinis for the first time, this gritty, medieval fantasy world that felt alive like no other, with its memorable characters and hauntingly beautiful music, will forever be one of the most cherished memories of gaming for me and many others.
If you feel similarly and have enjoyed returning to these games over the years many times over as I have, do yourself a favor and play "The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos" now. I regret not having overcome my skepticism and hesitation to play an RPG in a language that I do not know at all sooner. It honestly almost made me want to learn Polish just to be able to appreciate this jewel of a game even more. It's unfathomable with what an insane amount of love, dedication, and pure talent this was made. In many aspects, it goes above and beyond the games that inspired it, and is at the same time a love letter to them and to a bygone era of gaming before every semblance of challenge was watered down to be more appealing to a mass market.
Archolos may be clad in an old (albeit highly polished) visual style and mechanics, but it is in every sense a game to which many of today's AAA games cannot hold a candle when it comes to those aspects that made the original Gothic games so brilliant: storytelling, atmosphere an immersion, and a love for detail that can bring a tear to one's eye. In my first (and possibly not last) playthrough, I investedd almost 120 hours in it, and rarely has completing a game felt similarly rewarding.
I can only hope that gamers of younger generations and are not motivated by nostalgia can find a way to look beyond the seemingly dated visuals and mechanics -- because, seriously, this is one of the, if not the best RPG I have ever played.
Long time Gothic fan here so I'm embarrassed to admit that I was skeptical about this at first, but I'm glad I gave it a chance because it's incredible.
The team behind this clearly know what makes Gothic great and it's all here - the atmosphere, the characters, the slow and rewarding progression, and the attention to detail that brings the world to life.
The translation feels a little off at times (I'm an English speaker) so I suspect I'm missing some of the nuance in the dialog, but it's not a big deal.
I'm only about 15 hours in but have loved every second of it so far, and can't wait to see what else the island has to offer.
I hope that the devs behind this go on to do more - I'd pay good money for an experience like this.
