Beschreibung
The Age of Decadence is an isometric, turn-based, single-player role-playing game set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The game features a detailed skill-based character system, multiple skill-based ways to handle quests, choices & consequences, and extensive dialogue trees.

Traditionally, many fantasy RPGs are about killing things, clearing up dungeons, and being a hero. Now, there is nothing wrong with mindless fun and wish fulfillment, but we serve a different meal here. Quoting from one of the reviews:

“Well, if you want a hardcore, heavy metal roleplaying experience that challenges you, this is the ticket. Otherwise, take a pass. The game is vicious, both in its lack of morality and its merciless systems. If you want to be the hero of a story, run and don’t look back. If you want to be Attia of the Julii or be a power player, this is your RPG.”

The focus of the game is not on killing monsters, but rather on dealing with fellow humans and factions, trying to survive – easier said than done – and making a name for yourself. Naturally, to accommodate all that scheming, plotting, and backstabbing, we give the player plenty of choices, from multiple solutions to quests to different paths you can take through the game. You (and your actions) will determine who your friends and enemies are. There are no default good and bad guys.
  • 23 skills, ranging from Dagger and Critical Strike to Disguise and Persuasion to Alchemy and Lore.
  • Tactical combat system, featuring a flexible set of standard attacks, special attacks such as whirlwind and impale, and aimed attacks at different body parts.
  • 8 weapon types: daggers, swords, axes, hammers, spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, each with individual traits.
  • Non-combat quest resolutions and a well-developed diplomatic path.
  • Over 100 quests, taking you to 20 locations: towns, outposts, archeological digs, sealed places of Power, underground facilities, and temples.
  • Each situation has multiple ways of handling it, based on your skills, reputation, and connections.
  • An interesting world with rich history and unclear future that your actions can shape into seven very different game endings.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons with different properties, brew different potions, experiment with Greek's fire and black powder.
  • Hundreds of items, ranging from weapons and armor to scrolls, tools, flasks, and pre-war relics.

Extremely disappointing

I really thought i would never have to make a review on GOG, but this game really bugs me. At first, it looks really good with nice plots and various ways to solve problems, but you discover very soon that the "watch your step" behaviour doesn't work in your favor at all. If i had to sum up, i'd say that everybody is lying to you, but you can't lie to anyone. I decided to take a merchant working for the merchant's guild. Everything was fine at the beginning, even if the game really makes you feel that the whole situation was stuck just before you magically appeared, but when i arrived in the second city, everything went like sh*t. I had to rally support to overthrow the government there but i found myself in a complicated situation since one of the "support" wanted me to cross my boss and since she didn't take no for an answer, i had to go along and say "okay, i'll be with you", thinking that i will betray her in time. But it never happened. Once i gathered support, the game was on a roll and everything went on an instant. I couldn't do or say anything and i had to leave on a huge failure since the new boss allied with the women who mislead me. I thought this was just a mistake and i tried to keep on but something similar happened just after that which made me want to throw my screen away. So i am extremely disapointed, especially when i have to pay almost 30 dollars for it. Even old school RPGs like KOTOR 2 proposed to change sides, interrupt your quests, modify your alliegance, change your word and so on at almost every step, but this game does not come close to that, even if it says so. What a waste.

Best (C)RPG I have played in years

AoD is a thought provoking game with a rich lore and array of choices. This game offers real impactful choices at almost every turn, and this is what most RPG's have been missing since at least New Vegas. Do yourself a favor and install the "community" mod : http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php/topic,7451.msg150658.html#msg150658 Don't listen to the folks utilizing the term "railroading." This game provides progression and the story progresses along with your character, but how it does so is dependent on your choices, strengths, and the contextualization that the world of AoD offers. Apparent "railroading" only occurs when your character acts thoughtlessly or without appropriate preparations. Don't be afraid to save scum to explore the possibilities. Let me summarize why you should buy this game, on sale or not: Think of all those hidden gem games that people missed when they were released but are discussed today as hallmarks of innovation and genuine art. When the memories of PoE, D:OS, and W2 have faded, this game will be the one that is remembered. This game is a return to the spirit of PS:T and F1&2, an example of artistry in the realm of CRPGs, and an exstatic offering of balance, challenge, character creativity to all players that undertake its journey.

Sounds better than it is.

I was pretty hyped when I started reading about this game, but overall, it was disappointing. They tout a vast array of skills available. Yes, there are. But many of them are only marginally useful, often for one particular quest. I'll use stealth as an example. I typically play ranger/rogue type characters, so I built one. There is no sneaking around, reconnoitering an area, picking your target. There is a dialogue page, that offers a choice to sneak into an area. You either succeed, or fail, which means you fight, or you run away. Fighting is rarely a good choice in this game. Particularly if you are given a choice. Which, for all the talk of choice/consequence in the game; there really isn't much of either. You are plagued by dialogue skill checks, that are ultimately simply scripted 'choose your own adventure' style events. They typically seem to end in a fight, a locking out of another approach, and more than occassionally a scripted flat out death with no option to even try and fight your way out. There are no dungeons to speak of, nor is there much in the way of exploration. There is very little 'treasure' to be found, and most of what you do find are seemingly random artefacts that do...something...to a machine...somewhere. Maybe. If you pass a skill check. The storyline is lackluster at best, with no real impetus to follow it, and very easily broken. 12 hours, I completed the storyline, by complete accident. I simply found the location I needed to go to, and went there to try and explore, only to get locked into the endgame sequence. The one thing I can say about Age of Decadence, is that it takes a fresh apporach to combat. I like the way the combat system works insofar as instead of going through a skill rotation, you can choose a type of attack from fast, to power, to aimed shots. All with different action point costs. (Aimed shots are your friend here. If you have the skill). The problem is, there really isn't a whole lot of it. While I realize there are people who don't always want to play a combat character, personally, I play RPGs for combat of one form or another. It's an interesting setting, with an interesting combat system, but an overall disappointment.

A true RPG

Games train players a certain way, and in many cases it means that your assassin will also do okay in direct combat and etiquette, or that your mage just needs a few more potions to make it through a melee. Not so in this game, it will kill you, but only because you are not playing by the rules you set for yourself on your character sheet. Too few players realise this because they've been trained wrong. If you are having a hard time, that is the game telling you that you are playing against your choices. The branching paths and choice/consequences are superb. I started my 2nd play-through immediately after my 1st, and upon trying a 3rd at the same time, I discovered three truly different routes I did not know existed in my 1st play-through. This creates immense re-playability as you are only ever seeing a small part of the world's story and lore. And despite the game not being terribly long, this depth more than makes up for it. The main flaw I perceived was that it could do with better telegraphing which encounters/situations are not meant for your character. Improvement I would like to see is also what I enjoyed most about it, for it to do what it did do, it could do even more. There were situations where I could think of even more solutions to a problem, which weren't offered yet. But that a game gets the player that excited that they start thinking with the game, rather than against it, is a very good sign to me. I adore the unique (take on a post-apocalyptic) setting and the manner the old and new-world-lore are incorporated and interpreted. Where there is actual art, such as the world-map, it is well done and the overall aesthetic is quite unique. It could be improved upon, but for €10,- it is a steal and no game I've played in the past several years came close to its freedom and choice-driven narrative quality.

Fallout meets the Antiquity

This game truly brings back the same feelings I had when I first launched Fallout as a youth: a sense of awe at the detailed and somehow realistic world presented in the game, as well as an insatiable thirst to know more about it. Not only is the Age of Decadence really well written, but the complex choices/consequences system offers a lot of replayability. My first playthrough took me 18 hours – among the best hours spent playing a video game in my entire life. However, I would not recommend this game if you: 1- don't like reading; 2- are allergic to the old stats/skills checks system in dialogues and quests; 3- are willing to play a god (hehe…); 4- dislike not being able to achieve every quest in one playthrough. But that's it. The rest is pure gold. *CRPG skill check passed*
