Beschreibung
The Age of Decadence is an isometric, turn-based, single-player role-playing game set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The game features a detailed skill-based character system, multiple skill-based ways to handle quests, choices & consequences, and extensive dialogue trees.

Traditionally, many fantasy RPGs are about killing things, clearing up dungeons, and being a hero. Now, there is nothing wrong with mindless fun and wish fulfillment, but we serve a different meal here. Quoting from one of the reviews:

“Well, if you want a hardcore, heavy metal roleplaying experience that challenges you, this is the ticket. Otherwise, take a pass. The game is vicious, both in its lack of morality and its merciless systems. If you want to be the hero of a story, run and don’t look back. If you want to be Attia of the Julii or be a power player, this is your RPG.”

The focus of the game is not on killing monsters, but rather on dealing with fellow humans and factions, trying to survive – easier said than done – and making a name for yourself. Naturally, to accommodate all that scheming, plotting, and backstabbing, we give the player plenty of choices, from multiple solutions to quests to different paths you can take through the game. You (and your actions) will determine who your friends and enemies are. There are no default good and bad guys.
  • 23 skills, ranging from Dagger and Critical Strike to Disguise and Persuasion to Alchemy and Lore.
  • Tactical combat system, featuring a flexible set of standard attacks, special attacks such as whirlwind and impale, and aimed attacks at different body parts.
  • 8 weapon types: daggers, swords, axes, hammers, spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, each with individual traits.
  • Non-combat quest resolutions and a well-developed diplomatic path.
  • Over 100 quests, taking you to 20 locations: towns, outposts, archeological digs, sealed places of Power, underground facilities, and temples.
  • Each situation has multiple ways of handling it, based on your skills, reputation, and connections.
  • An interesting world with rich history and unclear future that your actions can shape into seven very different game endings.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons with different properties, brew different potions, experiment with Greek's fire and black powder.
  • Hundreds of items, ranging from weapons and armor to scrolls, tools, flasks, and pre-war relics.

My Path to Frustration

There is an opportunity to play this game without fights, let me show you how I failed mine. I chose a loremaster and spent most of stats in intelligence, perception and charisma. But I wasn't sure if it was possible to complete the game with no fighting at all. So several points were spent in spears and dodging and the majority in Lore, Persuasion, Streatwise and Crafting. I completed only a few missions in starting village Teron and proceeded to Outpost, where I naturally as a loremaster fixed some kind of mechanism and agreed to be escorted to another city. This event suddenly initiated Act II and without a second thought, I explored new city and made lots of saves. Finally I realized that I cannot simply return to the first city and that all quests and opportunities were gone. Problems started to snowball immediately, because I lacked precious skills to pass checks and complete quests. With despair and help of official game wiki, I however managed to make some progress, but stuck in the Act III. There are 2 specific locations which I need to pass. The first one is Dead River, but I lack required lore and craft skills to resolve things peacefully and unable to kill even a single scorpion. The second one is Hellgate: here I lack streetwise and persuasion as well as combat skills to deal with constructs. There are also no side quests left which I'm able to finish. Although the game looks interesting and realistic in some ways, its design flaws ruin the whole enjoyment. It's possible to notify a player, that he'll lose the ability to return and finish his business. And it's possible to provide more solutions keeping in mind lots and lots of character builds (at least for main story line). The game leaves me with a feeling that the weekend was lost.

A 2020 Review - The Age of Decadence

Score: 4/10 Mediocrity Score: Mediocre at Best. The Age of Decadence is a strangely unbalanced turn-based CRPG. It rather uniquely takes combat out from being the main focus and pits the player into a scenario where you can take different approaches. Touted for being a game where "choices matter", the game somehow feels so linear - locking the player into a path chosen early on. Choices in the game will keep you on your toes, that is until you realize the pattern of don't trust anyone. My advice - play the demo first. Tags: mediocre, unbalanced, dialogue-heavy, cheap Play the demo first. Both very difficult and very easy. Unique in its approach, in The Age of Decadence you can 100% avoid all combat in the game by taking a more charismatic-stacked approach in your character build. The game becomes incredibly simple when you choose this non-combat route. It turns into a dialogue-heavy, point-and-click game where if you make the wrong choice you likely will be thrown into a combat situation where you will surely, and cheaply, die. Go with the combat route, and you are faced with a stacked-against-you RNG-based combat which is difficult to the point of coming off as both brutal and cheap. The one thing both routes have in common is the smoke-and-mirrors masking the cheap game-ending situations it constantly throws your way. In complete fairness reading reviews, playing the demo, or even the reading developer's own disclaimers - potential players have been warned that "there is a good chance that you won’t like it, precisely because we took too many liberties with the established design". I can't help but feel like this is akin to being told "Here's the really over-cooked steak you ordered. There is a good chance you won't like it, but since this is all intentional - we've taken an extra heavy-handed approach with its blackened design." Yet here I am, disappointed that I paid for a really over-cooked steak that has an impressive char-broiled aesthetic.

True CRPG with Choice and Consequences

Modern classic - Age of Decadance is challenging RPG for new players. Reason is simple - modern player is lazy. He think that game must be easy and casual. Every character must have right to live from start to the end, visit all places, win all quests and competition and kill Big Bad Boss without sweat. Even if it was very unbalanced character made without care. In that games world made for players character - not players character try to survive in world. AoD give you another point of view. Most build are valid it is true. But every build have its flaws and you will be wandering - is your build good at all? You can play your game with talker - but then you must back away from combat. You cannot resolve all situations just with words. And of course you cannot be Arenas Champion. You can play game as combat character - but then you miss some quests and even locations. You can try and play hybrid - it is most challenging but most rewarding experience. But even then - you will see only small part of the game. Factions play major role in story line and all factions have different chains of quests for player. Sometimes it is same event - like assassination - but from the another faction perspective. And almost every quest have different endings. Often you can betray your masters and sometimes they will betray you. Plus in this game your actions matters. In many games you kill dozens of enemies but still some stupid thugs try to rob you in the bright day! Here body count is part of dialog system. If you are bloody murderer some people think twice before insult you. Combat is very hard but balanced. Quests are sensible and hand-crafted. Crafting and alchemy is brilliant. Quest decisions, builds, choice, equipment and tactics - all matters and have consequences. What more you want from classic RPG? It isn't pop-culture Hollywood style game and it isn't have romances and that biowarian thing about LGBT rights. It is art from people who love CRPG and it is awesome!!!

Age of Decadence

I like pretty much everything about this game. However, I think the developers went overboard with skill checks and "choices & consequences". I don't think it would have hurt the game to be a little more linear. Instead, I spend a lot of my time watching loading screens following choices whose consequences were a little opaque. You really can't play and enjoy this game without a walkthrough, especially in the beginning.

Anti player

After multiple runs and builds my conclusion is that the devs are anti-player.
