Beschreibung
The Age of Decadence is an isometric, turn-based, single-player role-playing game set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The game features a detailed skill-based character system, multiple skill-based ways to handle quests, choices & consequences, and extensive dialogue trees.

Traditionally, many fantasy RPGs are about killing things, clearing up dungeons, and being a hero. Now, there is nothing wrong with mindless fun and wish fulfillment, but we serve a different meal here. Quoting from one of the reviews:

“Well, if you want a hardcore, heavy metal roleplaying experience that challenges you, this is the ticket. Otherwise, take a pass. The game is vicious, both in its lack of morality and its merciless systems. If you want to be the hero of a story, run and don’t look back. If you want to be Attia of the Julii or be a power player, this is your RPG.”

The focus of the game is not on killing monsters, but rather on dealing with fellow humans and factions, trying to survive – easier said than done – and making a name for yourself. Naturally, to accommodate all that scheming, plotting, and backstabbing, we give the player plenty of choices, from multiple solutions to quests to different paths you can take through the game. You (and your actions) will determine who your friends and enemies are. There are no default good and bad guys.
  • 23 skills, ranging from Dagger and Critical Strike to Disguise and Persuasion to Alchemy and Lore.
  • Tactical combat system, featuring a flexible set of standard attacks, special attacks such as whirlwind and impale, and aimed attacks at different body parts.
  • 8 weapon types: daggers, swords, axes, hammers, spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, each with individual traits.
  • Non-combat quest resolutions and a well-developed diplomatic path.
  • Over 100 quests, taking you to 20 locations: towns, outposts, archeological digs, sealed places of Power, underground facilities, and temples.
  • Each situation has multiple ways of handling it, based on your skills, reputation, and connections.
  • An interesting world with rich history and unclear future that your actions can shape into seven very different game endings.
  • Detailed crafting and alchemy systems: forge your own weapons with different properties, brew different potions, experiment with Greek's fire and black powder.
  • Hundreds of items, ranging from weapons and armor to scrolls, tools, flasks, and pre-war relics.

A valiant attempt that just isn't fun

The setting and general atmosphere are excellent. The ideas behind the gameplay are worthwhile. The actual implementation is just too difficult all along the way. In order to accomplish certain tasks or survive certain situations, you need to have enough points assigned to certain skills (whether they be combat skills or non-combat); you have no way of knowing how much skill you will need for a given task until after you've tried it and failed. You spend a lot of time trying and failing things, reloading a save, allocating some points and trying again. Maybe it works the second time, maybe not; sometimes you just don't have enough skill points to get through a plot-critical situation because you didn't know you'd need points for it. The combat in particular is extremely difficult and unforgiving. I've seen a total of three fights that felt suitable in terms of difficulty; all the others have been from 20% to 50% harder than what my characters were capable of doing at that point. For example, playing a mercenary who joins the guard (using default stats and nearly all points in combat skills), when I did the plot-critical mission to take the tower, I ended up with 1 hit point left and 2 nearly undamaged enemies still to kill. I had to exploit a gimmick involving a staircase and alchemy in order to slowly wear them down, 2 to 3 hp per round. In most fights you don't have such gimmicks available and you likely just die. If you focus on talking your way out of fights, you will still run into situations where you can't avoid fighting, and then you are extremely likely to die with no combat skill; if you focus on combat skill you just keep running into harder and harder fights without having your combat skill scaling up appropriately. If you intend to complete this game, expect to have to know all the solutions and all the optimal moves and skill point allocations ahead of time. It is not possible to just play through like a normal game.

Great RPG

I played an assassin, and stabbed everyone in the neck with critical strike and then escaped with stealth. Great game

Probably the best RPG of the last years

I have tried this game after reading many things about it, both good and bad. What I found is a really great game, with truly satisfying choice and consequences, which matter and change the game completely, to the point than in a single playthrough you just see a small portion of the game. The plot is well written and different than the usual quest to save the world. The combat system is tactic and full of options, if unforgiving. What's important to get is that you can't do everything in a single playthrough. Specializing is key, particularly for beginners, who should focus on a limited number of skills and play styles.

Rule of No Choice

GAMEPLAY Illogical, inconsistent, railroaded. Ever heard of Rule of Three in RPGs? There's Rule of No Choice instead. You either pass a railroaded skillcheck, or don't and enter a railroad to hell. For the majority of the game, there is a single option to complete your endeavour. DIFFICULTY You can't succed in the game without a guide. Anyone who tells you the contrary is a liar. COMBAT Requires skill min-maxing and luck. Otherwise, you die. NON-COMBAT Requires skill min-maxing and luck. Otherwise, you die. STORY Would be great for a game of 80-90s, but definitely boring in 2010s at the time of release, and simply out novelty and freshness of in 2020s. DIALOGUES Prepared by authorlings working for peanuts. Neither engaging, nor masterly written. CONCLUSION The devs spent 10 or so years to build a game where a player doesn't matter, and they succeded. You, as a player, don't matter. I'm totally fine with this approach, people are/were playing ADOM or Wizardry or Darkest Dungeon or Darks Souls or BG1/2-LoB difficulty. The only thing that they were distinguishing themselves from "meer power RPG developers" and promised to present multilayer branching. However, at the end they turned out to be long-nosed Pinocchios, not even nearly fulfiling their promises.

An Exquisite RPG for The Ages

Age Of Decadence is one of the greatest turn-based RPGs I've ever enjoyed! I'm a huge ancient history nerd and particularly like Ancient Rome as a setting, so this game's low-fantasy take on that period was the first thing that intruiged me. I knew I'd instantly like this game from the start due to the varied classes and character customization possibilities. It's all clearly well thought out, with an exquisite attention to detail. From stats, to dialogue options, to branching questlines with real consequences that actually give you agency and impact. The music is enchanting. The atmosphere is mysterious and compelling, with every major city unique and changing as you progress through the game. I adore the rich lore. It's presented entirely text-based, which means engaged and thoughtful reading. My current playthrough is for an Assassin. The way this game handles the guilds and the approach for this parcitular class is refreshing. You have plenty of oppurtunity to strengthen your loyalty or to change sides dynamically. It's an amazing feeling! Combat is definitely punishing...if you're not strategic and misspend your skill/combat points. I actually had to restart the game completely once to get the hang of it. Then the game opened up to the point that my reputation actually deterred further needless combat, offering different dialogue options based on my body count. This is an example of how eery single aspect of this game is interconnected, building up until it pays off beautifully. The writing is just top knotch. A focused narrative with plenty of twists that demand multiple playthroughs with different characters to undertand the full extent. Addictive gameplay that's fun precisely because it's challenging. This game is unique not only for it's old-school mechanics in an age where everyhting is dumbed down, but because it truly has soul and passion. I'm so happy I took a chance on Age of Decadence!! I'll be enjoying it for a long time to come.
