This game is awesome! even today. If you grew up on Doom or Wolfenstien and never played this title you're absolutely going to fall in love with this title! its like doom meets daggerfall of the sorts. A feel of almost open world for that era of gaming I just cant believe I ever missed this title or even heard of it! its great and for 10 bucks or on sale its definitely worth to grab to add to the collection.
The 90es saw the release of Doom, which gave birth and popularize to the FPS genre and spawn a myriad of FPS clones, at first glance Strife, which use the Doom engine, is such a clone. However a deeper look will reveal that Strife has a number of innovations that make it stand from the rest of the FPS crowd.
The first thing is that the game is happen is a world map, where you will be free to go where you please rather than traveling through different levels. Another innovations is the number of RPG elements that is incorporated in the game, you will be giving missions to fulfill by the rebel leader, you could talk to the NPC in the game world, purchase weapons, ammunition and medkits and after each successful mission you could upgrade your health and fire accuracy. You could also have infiltration mission, where you need masquerade as an enemy soldier to get to your objective rather than just firing at everyone around you.
Another thing the game stand out for is the plot, while very cliche and generic it does play an important role in the game and allow you to make several plot choices that would change the course of the game and the final ending. You also have a sidekick which talk to you from a comm link and give useful advices as well make some sarcastic comments on your situation from time to time, I find this to add very much to the character of the game.
While the world design are good and easy to navigate, the enemy variety is somewhat limited and they tend to be boring, as well as most of the bosses who also tend largely to be the same. The auto aim at some of the weapons is not that good and while it understandably for an old game I'm feeling that Night Dive should have fixed it as part of the control modernization that they implemented.
In conclusion, Strife is an uncanny entry is the FPS genre, that was sadly overshadow by Quake which release is about the same time, highly recommended to those who want to play a 90es FPS with it own uncanny character.
To be honest I never heard of this game back in the days, so when it came back with this "enhanced" edition, why not ? Since I'm a fan of the doom-ilke from the 90's...
First, the game, despite its "classic" storyline of an order vs freedom fighters is more storydriven than Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem...
Indeed it's a kind of semi open world with a central hub and you get assignements BUT exploration can be rewarding with secondary quests that gives some interesting bonuses (money, amuunitions, weapons or stamina/ accuracy).
Unfortunately the game falls a bit short at its core : the fights and the level design
The former are tedious and become a bit boring thanks to too much enemies which are, more over, bullet sponge (avoid starting on Veteran...).
As for the level design...Well let's say you'll need a walkthrough otherwise you'll spend hours or days roaming in the same level.
Whereas it's more "complex" than Doom or Quake, idsoftware made it to the point where you can NEVER get lost (and trust me it comes from a guy who has one of the worst sense of direction in the world - in videogame or in the real world-), here even the map is useless since it mixes the various stores, making levels like the sewers a nightmare.
Too bad because the universe is interesting, there are 3 endings, a stealth approach is possible but its flaws make this more a curiosity than a "forgotten gem"...
Strife brings to the table some unique features that will revolutionize and create a new sub-genre of fps.
Introducing quests and typical features of RPG, it tries and successes ( in most cases) to make them '' work'' and to be fun while doing so.
Accompanied by a classical and cliche story and by a good and well-paced soundtrack, still today can be enjoyed and played, although it didn't age well in some parts.
However, This new edition brings new options feature that provides some opportunities that help the game feel a little more ''fresh''.
Overall, the game is worth your money and it is a must-buy for the enthusiasts of the genre, and the veteran edition can be a good opportunity for newcomers to enjoy strife with some minor feature revisited.
I just finished this. Unique story and fun gameplay and great atmosphere but takes a bit of getting used to. Esentially this is a Doom type game adapted into a narrative driven light-weight RPG. Doom engine/ui doesn't quite fit that type of game so feels a bit awkward at times but for me personally I thought it was great. I grew up with older DOS era 486 games and I love classic fps/rpgs and for me was quite fun.
- Takes a bit to get into it at first due to the dated design. The ui/inventory doesn't quite fit the RPG style since is really a Doom game forced to an RPG but the story is quite good.
- First location takes a while to figure out if you haven't played the game before you might be stuck in some areas.
+ Great story and atmosphere. Blends cyberpunk, post apocalyptic and medieval/fantasy genres perfectly.
+ Map design is great with lots of puzzles and fun secrets to discover. Is like Hexen but more streamlined and locations make more sense. For example you have neutral towns populated with NPCs making the world feel more alive.
- Some locations are quite difficult. For me I got stuck in the sewers for a long time then gave up for a few months until I figured out a solution from a YouTube lets play.
+ Has an automap and the re-design also features some points of interest markers which can help you figure out where to go next. A bit of handholding.
+ Enemies are very unique. Some can only be killed in specific ways. They do have even a few neutral NPCs that populate the world.
+ The game is long and it would probably take maybe around 1-2 week(s) to finish for new players.
- Weapon design is okay. I find myself using mainly machine gun and rocket launcher. The crossbow is completely worthless for the most part after you get machine gun. The grenade launcher is too unpredictable. There is a secret weapon but I never got to unlock it. I wish they had better weapon design.
