No online but is that really a problem ?

I've played all the streets of rage games, the official ones, and the unofficial ones (beats of rage, SOR remake, etc). This IS SOR 4. The graphics are beautiful and remind me of the old SOR, but also of other famous beat them up (like comix zone, with which it shares its "comic book" look). The colours are vibrant, and it's interesting to see the modern take on some old favorites. Gameplay is excellent, and old school as can be, with a few additions, like combos and furies. I see many people complaining that "there's no online", but in my opinion, games like these are meant to be played with your mates next to you, and not on the other end of the universe. Yet the game is not perfect: It's hard, incredibly hard for an SOR game (the others were pretty easy to beat in normal mode, here, it's gonna be a challenge), more so as there are no continues. Some of the enemies have a bit of an iffy hitbox: most notably the taser cops, who seem to be able to grab you from a solid meter away. Also, I'm a bit saddened that Max in it's SOR4 glory isn't playable, but 17 characters is nothing to overlook, (yeah, we get 4 axels, 4 blazes and 2 adams, but the movesets vary). All in all a very nice experience, and a great new entry into the series. Now I only hope it's the first in many more to come. And keep an eyes, there's a ton of easter eggs, from all levels and bosses that come back to "background" nods, like Roo the Kangaroo as a barman.

Great game but lacks online

As others noted, it's a great game and an excellent sequel to the classic trilogy. I'll patiently wait for a patch soon, otherwise I'll have to request a refund and rebuy when online co-op is added.

Great Revival of a Genre

Who would have thought that old school 2,5 D side scrolling beat'em ups are still great fun today? Streets of Rage 4 stays true to the tested concept and adds a modern touch in all the right places. Local multiplayer co-op is supported and probably the most fun way to experience the game although single player works great, too. My only point of criticism is that the game is a bit light on content. Some branching pathways would have added to replay-ability. However, thanks to the Devs for supporting Linux and Mac versions.

Absolutery awesome

This game is amazing: it succeeds in paying a huge respect to its predecessors while extending the gameplay to meet 21st century's players expectations at the same time. It is so cool that it is a sequel and not a reboot! Here are my pros and cons: PROS: - Wonderful graphics and animation - Musics are great too, of course the retro ones but the new ones too - Game action is just amazing! Gameplay is tip top: devs made use of the extra-buttons to give more control. Skills of the characters are nice - Up to 4 players with a friendly-damage disabling option (a must-have!) - Works fine on a rather basic computer: I managed to play the game flawlessly in FullHD on a weak 2012 ultrabook, much slower than the minimal requirement (ultralow voltage, 6 GB RAM, GeForce 620M) - No-DLCs: lots of free items to unlock CONS: - Game is not so long (but so were the original games) but it is not so easy for an average gamer like me - I wish there were a sound test menu to listen to the wonderful soundtrack! I highly recommand buying this game. It totally met my expectations and this is quite rare! Congratulation to the devs for such a game!

It's really not the old Streets of Rage

I only bought this for singleplayer so whilst you should be aware of the multiplayer issues they are not a factor for me. Simply, I don't think SoR4 plays very much like the old ones. It's a lot more about juggling and combos now, as per the trailers to be fair, but means they tend to be strong and tedious. The enemies tend to be quicker than you, which is annoying and a lot of them have very long ranged rush attacks. Some can hit you when you are down and then juggle you - on one boss I repeatedly lost half my health when I got knocked down as an enemy would launch me from the ground and I would be juggled helplessly. A part of this is the AoE desperation move no longer really works as an emergency move. It gives you invicibility when doing it, but cannot be fired off when being hit so you have to do it before you really need it, or used offensively, but it does not feel like it works properly. Bosses all have their own invulnerability crutch powers normally combined with a rush move and I guess the only way around this it to launch your AoE move at the right time? I don't know, but they aren't very fun. When enemies start blocking your regular attacks as well, it just feels a lot clunkier and awkward than Streets of Rages 1,2 or 3 especially as you now can't close down enemies as they throw out jabs when you get near, so unlike the games of old you can't easily walk in for a grab. I do like that you can throw a weapon at someone's head and catch it on the rebound, that's cool. The graphics, whilst not a style I really like are nicely animated, so that's a plus. The music is completely forgetable, which is a real shame given the talent behind it. It's cheap, but sadly the real competition is streets of rage remake, which is free and with all the many options always going to be more like the SoR of old. This is a modern take on SoR and comes with changes that don't gel with me - it might have grown on me, but I'm not really itching to play again to find out
