Great atmosphere, detailed,... but.
(I own this game on Steam, and replayability is iffy, so not getting it on GOG) Awesome atmosphere with the background music, concept paintings during load sequences and the tutorial speaking, reminiscent of the Dune2 advisors. Quite complex tech tree... that's not a tree for long, because no decisions are final, you get the same options again and again. That being said, there ARE "optional traditions" to choose from, which have a huge impact in later game, spelling the difference between winners and losers. Lots of depth and options in picking up the initial race, and later changing options after researching the genetic techs required. That leads to a very varied AI in the encountered oponents... but the AI rarely follows what's described. There are achievements and events you're being told about, and preparing for and anticipating... that never happen (finding ancient artefacts? not even one, despite taking over the entire galaxy! midgame crisis? not unless you're VERY lucky!) The networking for multiplayer is mostly broken, requires accounts on the paradox website, so no LAN parties with this one! There are many limitations which don't make sense: expansion, diplomacy, can't start wars unless very specific stars align, can't manage colonies properly, the various types of races are all basically humanoids, including the robots, can't trade properly: click + or - buttons instead of typing an amount, later in the game it gets slow to advance, and many more. Yet I give it 4/5 because it's enjoyable... until it's not :) It's a good one to get on sale if you like 4x and you can find a good balance between galaxy size, amount of connections between star clusters and a myriad of other starting options, pick the DLCs carefully (some have broken triggers), and enjoy while it lasts (like with other Paradox games, when the publisher goes away or stops supporting their servers it's likely the game won't even start)
