Fun combat with a touch of SocJus
The Good - Turn based tactical combat mechanics are simple, but fun - Art and sound complement combat very well - Missions provide a good amount of variety and lots of challenge if you are feeling masochistic The Mid - Story is treated as a vehicle to string missions together and is otherwise incredibly bland - Characters are similarly boring and one note. An annoying character quirk is passed off as a "personality" The Bad - Even after you get used to the controls you will still be firing your characters' guns accidentally. Thankfully the game starts up very quickly so you'll be able to redo your turn easily if needed. - The graphics for ship interiors are often muddled and you have to pay extra attention to see if the floor above you is one you can or cannot shoot through. - The game has achievements in Steam, but not on GOG. This greatly limits the game's replayability. - There's a stinky undercurrent of "SocJus" throuhgout the game. Thankfully these are easy to ignore if you just don't talk to other characters in your party. The TL;DR Get the game if you want a simple and fun version of X-COM combat without the accuracy gamble. Don't get the game if you want a good story, fun characters, or replayability.

Disappointing after Steamworld Dig 1&2
This game was nothing but a disappointment for me. After playing and finishing SteamWorld Dig 1 & 2, I was really looking forward to this game (which, incidentally, I purchased first, but decided not to play until I purchased and played the others). Well, what a disappointment it was. I've played many turn-based strategy games over the years, and I gave this an honest effort, trying multiple times to see if I was just missing something. Unfortunately, after so much enjoyment I experienced with the SteamWorld Dig games, I just couldn't get into it. SteamWorld Heist has pretty graphics, but really, really disappointing gameplay and lacks a story to keep you engaged. The 3-star system for levels works for games with levels that can be played quickly. In this game, however, levels can take quite a while to complete and all the 3-star system does is create frustration rather than add value to the game. Also, levels felt far too much like an unnecessary grind during gameplay. At least I took the time to play SteamWorld Dig 1 & 2 first. For that, I'm grateful. If I had tried SteamWorld Heist first, I would have avoided purchasing the other SteamWorld games entirely, missing out of the hours of enjoyment I experienced from those games.
